JULY 4-5 Erik Munson and his orthern Power Sport -backed Suzuki came away with the lOp Expert wins at the third round of the Alaska State Motocross Championship Series. The race was held at Goose Island Raceway in Fairbanks, in 90 degree weather and competitors from all parts of Alaska and the Yukon converged to find out who's best in the far northwest. Munson and Joe Good of Palmer. have been locked in a tremendous battle for the 125cc Expert title this season. After the first two rounds the pair were tied in points, but the hot and dusty conditions favored Munson on his home track. Arctic Cat-Suzuki .MolOrsportssponsored Good constantly had problems with dust clogging his filter. Starts were very critical as the front runners were clear of the dust. Each day saw Good combine a decent moto with a terrible one, giving the points lead to Munson. Munson had to deal with two flat tires during the weekend and Sunday's I25cc Expert win went lo fellow Fairbanks area rider Andy Workman because of it. Munson totally dominated the 250cc Experts and cruised to every molO win_ Kawasaki of Anchorage's Jim McClain made the long trek from Anchorage payoff as he took both days' 500cc Expert victories. A lap earlier, the two collided at the. end o[ the spectator straight, and almost went down, but Ryan was able lo repass on the next corner. That lasted for a h~lf lap before Spear went around the inside of a cornel; in the back section and opened a slight lead by the checkers.
