Ferrell took gate four and that lefr Lucero on the hard pack in gate three. When the tapes lifted, Ott was the first to react, but Schwartz drove from the gate and beat everyone into the first corner. At that time it looked like Schwartz would emerge triumphant. Lucero mOlOred his Godden into second, b.ut Ott, with the outside drive, lOok it away. Ott moved in on Schwartz and began pressing him on the outside. As they came off turn two on lap three, Schwartz swung wide to block Ott's path, but Ott went low. It was a race to the third turn and they were side-by-side. When they came out of four, Ott had the lead. Ott moved it out for a two-length win while Lucero edged Schwartz for second in a photo finish. Results MAIN: 1. Bobby Ott (Gdn); 2. Ott blasts" IMS Speedway By Scott Daloisio 42 SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY I Over the past two seasons, "Showtime" Bobby Ott has only won three races at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. One of the races was a Handicap main on September 16, 1986. The others were two of the biggest 'l:vents that the track stages. He captured the 1986 California State Championship and on July I, of this year he won the Firecracker Derby. Ott got off 10 a rather shaky start on Wednesday's program. Riding the Balboa Imports/STP/Racecrafters/Jones Goggles/ArailCirelio Racing Godden, the white leathered rider only had three points after two rides. At the same point, Bobby Schwartz, the defending National Champion, had two wins and six points. The only rider close to Schwartz at that time was "Dangerpus" Dubb Ferrell. The wily veteran, who seldom competes at IMS, had five digits on his board after two outings. Alan Christian, after an impressive win in his first ride, fell in his second outing and collected zero points. He only garnered three more the eoore evening. Smooth riding John Sandona won his opening ride, but could only manage third, and one point, from his second outing. He finished last in the next two rides and then scratched before his ~inal race. Ott finally got on the winning side of the ledger in event 13. Proving that 13 isn't his unlucky number, he led from tapes to checkered over Andy Northrup. One race later, Schwartz kept his slate clean by winning easily over Louis Kossuth and Ferrell. Ott faced the defending race champion, Steve Lucero, in his fourth round ride. Lucero gated him from the pole but Ott rode around him before the e~d of lap one and went for his second consecutive victory. Schwartz closed the round by winning once again and that made him four ou t of four. Ott opened the final round with a dominating win over Christian and it was clear to see that the track was now to Ott's liking. Lucero won his fourth round ride over Ferrell and the points that both earned, put them into the main event. The final heat race of the night saw Schwartz defeat - Scotty Brown to pick up his 15th point and keep his perfect score alive. Schwartz, due to having the highest point total, got his pick of starting spots and wisely opted for the pole. Ott chose next and picked gate two. TRAVELERS REST, SC, JULY 4 Because of heavy rains and a light turnout at Riverside MX the races were divided into big bike and like bike catagories. Allen Barnes headed the pack of big bikes, winning the 125cc Amateur class and overall, followed closely by Rex Barnes (no relation), who won his first 125cc Novice ever. The Senior Mini riders let their qualifier results stand to avoid dei;lling with the mud on a rainy night. But some of the racers opted to run only the main. Most bravely agreed to splash around one more time, including Nicole Caldwell, who was third on.the first lap un~il the mud got her bike and pulled it down. David "Squiggs" Dickerson led from start to finish, fol.lowed by Marcus Cannon and Ronnie Yarbro. Chris Hutchins 'rode the Junior Mini class and was able to work his way up to third overall, as he took advantage of Yarbro's bobble to squirt past. Results JR MINI: i. Barrow was a three-class winner on the wide groove oval in a night that featured 97 entries and a packed grandstand. Barrow's first win of the night came in the 80cc class. He led Tommy Hayden and Steve Hall until the red £lag came out when three riders went down. On the single-file restart Barrow and Hayden resumed their spots and T.J. Burnette drove from the back to set the top three Pbsitioris. Hall moved up to finish fourth after moving past Brian Reed and Kevin Hill. After shaking loose from Brian Dowell, Barrow had clear sailing en route to the I25cc class win. Burnette ran to another third place finish wi th Chuck Allen following him across the line. The 200 and 250cc bikes were run together, but scored separately and it was Denne Williams going to the front of the pack. Barrow held down second before getting bumped to third by David Menser on the third lap. . Menser closed the gap but Williams hung on to take· the win. Barrow was the next rider to cross the line and scored the 200cc class win with Kevin Woodruff, Mark Walker and Jimmy Allen trailing. Williams also grabbed the holeshot in the Open final with David Flowers playing the .shadow. Williams made no mistakes and took a narrow win. Charles R. Southgate out-gunned his dad Charles K. for the third place slot. Jon Camp grabbed the lead in the 60cc main but it was Hayden taking the lead on lap two. Jones AUBURN, CA, JULY 3 Jim Sisemore became the first rider to win two Handicap main events and Eddie Ingels continued to dominate· the Scratch main on the res-' urfaced track in Auburn. Ingels blasted to three wins in Scratch racin~, and when he picked up the victory in the main event, heran his streak to eight straight on Northern California tracks. ·Bart Bast and Rocky Robinson went wheel-to-wheel in the main with Robinson riding the outside, but Ingels was long gone from the start. John Houston, Jr. looked quick in the early races, ho.wever, a slow start from gate one left him watching from the rear. It took nine weeks of rac, ing, but Sisemore finally became the first repeat winner in the Handicap main event. It looked like a scratch line up with four riders starting on the 40 yard line and things looked discouraging for Ingels and Sisemore as they lined up on the 50. It became bener balanced when Robinson was moved back to the 50 for his early start. When the gate went up Vance Felicio took the early lead with Joe Leduc following. Houston, Greg Martz and Steve Martin chased Leduc '(or a lap untIl Martin moved outside . to get ou t of the traffic. Marlin hooked up and moved into second. Robinson also went outside to battle with Houston and Martz. With the outside struggle going on Sisemore and Ingels were working the inside picking off riders ev.ery lap. On lap five Leduc lost it in turn one, Sisemore made it past, but Ingels was slowed considerably. Sisemore moved into the lead on lap six, and with Ingels so far back, Sisemore went on to win easily. Ingels made it into second, and Felicio was able to hold off Martin for third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Eddie Ingels; 2. Ban Bast; 3. Rocky Robinson; 4. John Houston Jr. HDCP: 1. Jim Sisemore; 2.
