Kelly Moran leeds Bobby Schwertz et Inlend Motorcycle Speedwey.
Schwertz went on to score the mein event victory.
from Shawn McConnell while
"Showtime" Bobby Ott won the
second from a determined Christian.
Schwartz, fighting for his life, held
back the determined bids of Pfetzing
over the final two laps to win the
third semi.
Faria, on the STP/Tsubaki/
Shoei/Oilzall/Cody
Productssponsored Jawa was perfect on the
night when the fourth semi began.
He was still perfect at the end of the
four lapper after scoring an easy win
ahead of Gary Hicks.
The main event featured two
riders, Schwartz and Faria, going for
their second Fair Derby title against
Ott and Moran. Moran was on the
outside and when he pushed the
tapes before the start, he sucked Ott
through. Ott broke the bottom tape
and was banished to the pits.
On . the start, with three riders,
Faria hammered the throttle from the
pole position and quickly moved
into a commanding lead over
Schwartz and Moran. Schwartz challenged over the first lap, but after
that it was all Faria and he started
saluting the fans on lap three. By the
time flagman Jeffy King waved the
checkered, Faria had a bulging eight
bike length lead over Schwartz and
Mor;1n.
Faria is already getting prepared
for 1988. When asked what was going
to happen next year, he smiled, gave
a thumbs up and winked "Three!"

Schwartz storms to
IMS win
By Scott Daloisio
SAN BERNARDI 0, CA, JULY 8
Bobby Schwartz and Gary Hicks
walked of[ with the top honors at
Inland Motorcycle Speedway.
Schwartz did his winning in the
Cycle Rider, Inc. Scratch main event,
while Hicks outpaced the field in the
eight lap Handicap main.
Schwartz had the Weslake of[ the
pole for .the main but he had to face
a formidable field. Kelly Moran sat
in gate two with Mike Faria in three
and "Showtime" Bobby Ott on the
outside.
The "Boogaloo Kid" got a rocket
gate and had a bike length advantage
as the pack slid imo turn one. Faria
tried the inside of the leader as they
powered down the back chute on the
first lap but the defending National
Champion guarded the pole and
protected his leadL
Having Faria trying to get by on
the pole is enough but then Schwartz
had to deal with Ott. The spectacular
performance attempted to relieve
Schwartz of the lead by going around
on the outside at the end of the
opening circuit. 'Schwartz had his
hands full with riders attempting to
pass on both sides but he did a
masterful job of fending them off.
The race raged on until Faria had
a motor seize on the third circuit.
Faria's motor letting go also affected
Ott. With Faria out of the way,
Schwartz only had to concentrate on
(ighting back Ott, and he ended up
winning by 15 feet over Ott and
Moran.
After the motor problem in the
Scratch main, Faria and his crew
rushed around to get his backup bike
ready for the rerun. he just made it
under the two minute warning and
he took his place on the 50 yard line.
Keith Larsen and John Sandona
tangled in the first bend and went
down. Larsen suffered a blow to the
head but he and Brown both made
the restart while Sandona was forced
to retire for the night.
When the event was restarted, there
were four laps to go and Hicks was
sharing the from yardage with
Hamill. Brant and Faria were 10
yards back and hoping to moum an
early challenge (or the lead. Brant
saw his hopes go away as soon as
they left the line. He was having
mechanical ills which, eventually,
forced him out.
•
Faria took Hamill for second
almost immediately and he set his
sights on leader Hicks. Faria be!f (Han).

STATELINE, In, JULY 9
AMA Expert Tim Stults rode six laps
in a total downpour, but managed
to stay on two wheels long enough
to win the 600cc Expert main event
at Northwest Speedway in Stateline.
The one-sixth-mile short track is a
new addition to the facilities, which
is one of the nicest in the west. It's
too bad that Mother Nature wasn't
kind tonight, as an Idaho thundershower dumped over an inch of rain
at the start of the mains.
Heat races started off the program
with JO 600cc Experts lining up in
a single row for a quick jaum to tum
one. When the dust cleared, AMA
Novice Pro Todd Sommers had built
up a healthy lead over a t\uee-way
battle between Experts Stults, Richie
Hayman and Brad Walters on a
Yamaha. Hayman laid his Honda
CR-based short tracker down, which
took pressure off of Sommers, who
went on to win. Sommers was jazzed
with the win, "This is great, I haven't
raced for two years and I came out
and beat the Experts," he said.
StuJts came back to lead the Open
Expert preliminary on what was
possibly the prettiest HarleyDavidson in the northwest, the
"Washington Gold Brand," which
was black with gold anodized motor
and rims. Stults rode the Harley
Shop-sponsored, Pancho-tuned 750
to the win with impressive looking
Triumph riders Greg Triber and
Hayman taking second and third,
both netting direct transfers.
Trophy dashes took the top three
placers in heat races. The first to sit
in the winner's circle was Mini class
winner Mark Steuve. Billy Lem won
the 250cc Expert dash and Scott
Coyne came away with the .win in
the 30 and Up class. Stults' premature jump off the line in the 600cc
Expert dash went unseen, and the
Spokane rider claimed top honors
over Walters and heat winner
Sommers.
The skies turned incredibly black
at the staging o( the main events, so
the finals were out from 10 to six
laps. Just as soon as the Mini main
was completed, the clouds let loose
with the first of several showers. It
started as a brief cloudburst in the
250cc Expert class, which didn't slow
Lem down at all. Coyne found out
just how slick it was after holeshoting the 30 and Up main. His 2 I-inch
front wheel washed out, dropping
him to third, where he would finish
at the end of six laps behind Yamaha
riders Dicky LeRoy and Keith
Raschko.
Much like the saying, "When it
rains it pours," that statement pretty
much summed up how th.e weather
was shaping up when the 600cc
Experts staged. It took three restarts
to get them underway due to the track
becoming a mini version of the
Snake River. Sommers hooked up
the best to lead the final, but going
into turn two, he got squirrely and
let Stults and Hayman get past. At
this point of the race, it was downright scary. The grandstands were
completely empty, the track
resembled a river and riders were
mud-covered and strewn around the
track. Stults, who is also a motocross
pro, stayed upright long enough t9
win what will most likely be the most
bizarre race of the summer. Sommers
took second and Hayman, third.
