Derby Speedway COSTA MESA, CA, JULY 10 History was made at the Fair Derby, on Coors Western Night at the Orange County Fairgrounds, as Mike Faria picked up the win. The Fair Derby is an annual event that dates back to 1970. No rider had ever won the event twice, but Faria shattered the time honored tradition of a different winner each season before a massive crowd. Faria became the first rider to win the event twice and he did it in consecutive years. There were four previous champions in the field. Bobby Schwartz, the 1978 winner, was joined by Alan Christian (1979), Robert Pfetzing (1985), and Faria, the 1986 winner. Twenty-four riders were on the p~ogram and the first order of business was to' cut the field down to 16 riders by running 18 heats. Four of the sport's rising stars were tied for the final two spots in the semis. A four-rider runoff was held and Northern California's Jim Sisemore passed Greg Hancock for the win. Hancock hung on to the second place spot to earn his ticket to the semis. Louis Kossuth and Walt Farnum finished third and fourth and they were relegated to the role of spectators. The first-place finisher in each of the four semis went to the main event while second place earned a spot in the consolation. The third and fourth place finishers were eliminated for the duration.
