Kent had to battle the Honda of Charles Burnett and Jim Young on the well-prepped Perris short-course. Kent took the overaJl honors with Burnett clinching second and Young rounding out the top three. In regular SMX class racing, Honda rider Ulf Johansson and Suzuki pilot Jim Kunt2 engaged in a fierce two-moto battle for 250cc Intermediate supremacy. Results A Production class winner Jamie Jam~s leads Mike Harth (88), Paul Bray (11) and Scott Russell at Rockingham. James on track at Rockingham RR By Larry Lawrence 36 ROCKINGHAM, NC, JULY 12 Baton Rouge, Louisiana's Jamie James finally decided that second place wasn't good enough, so James went for broke on his Quick Sand & Gravel/Shoei/Dunlop-sponsored Suzuki GSXRIIOQ and won $1000 from Suzuki for his win in the A Production race at North Carolina Motor Speedway. James, who is on the comeback trail trom injuries suffered in a cra h in Texas last year, held off a taJented field of WERA racers on the combined higb-banked ovaJ and infield course at Rockingham. James launched his big Suzuki into the lead at the start, as the powerful machines climbed on to the banking. The Suzukis of Paul Ray, Mike Harth and Scott Russell were in James' draft. Harth drafted by Bray early and immediately put pressure on James. James' Suzuki seemed to have the advantage climbing on the banking and lap after lap he would put out. a slight lead, but by the time the riders were braking to the infield Harth, Bray and Russell would be right back on James' tail. On the sixth lap of the 10-lap event Harth made his move and overtook James braking into the infield. James, however, wasn't about to let the victory slip out of his hands. "I've beenJetting people push me around all year. I finally decided that if I want to win some races I'd better get more aggressive," said James. His aggressiveness paid off and with two laps to go James was back in front. Harth, Rus~ell and Bray were still well within striking distance and they had one more cbance to go for the win. On the last lap as James headed up the quartet, several slower riders were blocking the fast line coming down off the banking into the infield. All four riders got through smoothly but it was James who just barely held off a hard charging Harth to take the exciting win. . The B Production race was almost as exciting. This time it was Scott Russell's turn to show what he could do. Harth again led a good portion of the race before his Michelin tires started going away and Russell took advantage and got by for the win. "It's about time I started winning some of these," said tbe $1300 richer Russell. Results A PROD EX: 1. Jamie James (Suz): 2. Mike Harth (Suz); 3. SCO" Russell (Suz): 4. Paul Bray (Suz); 5. Speedway USA win to Schwartz By Scott Daloisio. VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY II Bobby Scbwart2 and Mike Faria hav been the number one and two riders throughou t the 1987 season so it was. only fitting that they split the Division One main events at Speedway USA. It was a special night of racing as Speedway USA, in conjunction with 7-Eleven, was giving $1 from every ticket sold to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Schwartz took the win in th Scratch main event and it was his) seventh of the season at tbe desert track. Faria came back to win the eight lap Handicap main from theback yardage. Both Schwart2 and Faria entered the Scratch main undefeated on the Scratch side of the program. Brad Oxley was off the pole with Faria out of two but super gater Schwartz, beat the field from gate three and took the lead into the first bend. Faria totally missed the start and was flat footed when the tapes flew up but he immediately set his sights on Oxley. Using the outside, he went I around Oxley at the end of the first circuit. That left him with the tall order of having to pass Schwart2 fOf tbe lead. The Jawa rider tried to get inside Schwart2 in turn three on the second revolution but Schwart2 was equaJ to the task and fought him back. Faria got a big drive coming off turn two on lap three but Schwart2 out raced him to turn three. That was the last challenge until the checkered flag when Faria closed but Schwart2 ' knew he had the race in the bag. After the event, a youngster in a wheelchair, from the Muscular Dystrophy Association, presented Schwart2 with a beautiful trophy from 7/Eleven. Schwart2 accepted the tro'phy but quickly gave it back to the youngster to keep for himself. That fine gesture was greeted by a deafening roar from aJl of tbe fans who gathered for the races.
