Bobby Schwartz continued his siege
of Southern California speedway at
the O range County Fairgrounds
Friday night when he won his third
Scratch main event in the space of
48 hours.
Even though Schwartz has been
the winningest rider in Sou thern
California in 1987, he had not won
a Scratch main at Cos ta Mesa since
May 29. On th e ot her hand, " Flyi n"
Mike Faria had not lost a Scratch
main event a t Costa Mesa in J u ne.
As usual, by the ti me Friday's main
ended, th ey were at the head of the
pack fighti ng for the first place spot.
. Earlier in the eve ni ng , Faria
defeated Schwartz in their Scratch
sem i and they lined up elbow to
elbow in the main. Sch wartz, on the
Silkolene / Budweiser/ C.T.I. Brace/
Justice Bro th ers/ Ma lco lm Smith
Weslake, was coming off gate two
with Faria in three. The pole position was occupied by Bobby Ott with
" Fast" Eddie Castro coming from th e
extreme outside.
Schwartz blazed the way into th e
first tum ' over Ott and Faria. Ott
bobbled ou t of two and that allowed
Fari a to tak e th e second spo t. Faria
stayed wi thi n a co u ple o f b ik e
leng ths over th e first two laps bu t
he cou ldn 't mak e a so lid cha llenge
on
th e def endin g N at ion al
Ch ampion.

Finally, o n the fin al lap, Fa ria
moved in but Schwartz had led it a ll
the way a nd he was not abo u t to give
it a way late in th e even t. Wh en they
crossed under the chec kered it was
" Boogaloo" by a half len gth over
Faria. Ott held o ££ Castro, who was
in hi s first Costa Mesa Scra tch main
of th e season, for third.
Wa lt Farnum won h is second
Costa Mesa H andicap main in three
weeks time bu t he had to work
ex tremely hard for it.
After two restarts, Farnum and
Brown led th e pa ck into the first
bend. Farnum had a slight advantage
in the first bend and he took Bro wn
wide. Before Bro wn cou ld pull it ·
back down , he had dr opped from
second to fourth. H icks moved in on
the final laps but it wasn 't eno ugh.
Farnum edged him to th e line for
the win. Third spot went to Lucero
with Ha ncock fourt h.

Another Speedway win
for Schwartz at Ascot

After a week away from victory circle,
" Boo g a loo" Bo b by Schwartz
returned to his favorite spot and held
the trophy for winning th e Scratch
main event at Chris Agaj anian 's
Ascot South Bay Stadium Thursday
night. Over 4,000 fans jam med the facil ity to wa tch speedway a nd to participate in the annual South Ba y
Stadium " 50's Night. " It was also th e
second n ight that th e ca meras of
ESPN we re o n h and and t hey
recorded th e def ending Nat io na l
Ch ampion 's 10th win in 12 o utings
a t th e facil it y in 1987.
Sc hwa rtz was und ef eat ed in
Scra tch com pe titio n on the n ight
a nd he rode a pe rfect four la ps in
the Scra tch main. Comi ng from the
o utsi de sta rt ing position in th e main ,
he got the ga te and CU L down to the
po le before th e field reach ed turn
one. Ott was o ut second fo llow ed by
Mike Faria and the " Viking" Sco tty
Brown.

through its paces, and he moved o u t
of turn four on lap two. Fari a took
advantage of th e miscue and took the
second place spot awa y.
Ott quickly recovered from his
error and rode back a ro und Faria
wi th a n im pressive move to reclaim
second. The actio n was back in
seco nd bu t first spot was cu t and dry
to Mr. Schwartz. Ott finished half a
stra igh t back in second with Brown
fourth.
Very few Southern Ca lifornia fans
had ever hea rd of Seattle's Seth
Church before th e week began but
th ey took quick notice wh en he cam e
o££ th e line to set the early tempo
in th e Handicap main event. Trinon
Cirello held down th e runner-up
spot until Keith " Sna kema n " Larsen
went under him on the back straight
on la p three. Cirello was forced wide
and he ended up getting freight
trained before he could pull it back
down on the groove.

television cameras mounted to his
Shoei Helmet, too k the third spot
behind Larsen and they went after
Ch urch and the poin t p osition.

to watch as Larsen, Brown, Bill y

all go t by him befo re the end of the
fifth go-'round.

he won by some five leng ths. Brown
took second and filmed Larsen's win
for th e TV crowd with Billy Hamill
third. Christian, back on his own
equipment for th e first time in over
a year, fin ished with a very cred ita ble
fourth while trying to get his bikes
dialed in .

It was Sh ort's Night at john LaDouceur's In land Motorcycle Speedway
and a cro wd of 6675 fan s jammed
into th e 12-year-old facility. By the
end of th e evening it co uld have been
renamed Schwartz' Ni ght as th e
" Boo ga loo Kid " won th e Cycl e
Rid er, In c. Scrat ch main even t for
the fourth tim e in 1987.
It was th e first win at IMS for
Schwartz since th e end of Ma y, but
he was clear ly th e cla ss of th e field
in th e four lap main event . The de)
fending Na tional Champion's only
loss in Scratch racing came in his,2
heat race wh en he was defeated by
Scott Brant.

When the tapes went up, Schwartz
cam e out lik e he was shot o ut o f a
cannon, a nd he had a bike leng th
lead over Phil Collin s as they hit turn
one. Steve Lucero a nd Mike Faria
cam e from th e outside start ing spotsj
and th ey immediately found themselves in a battle for third.
Schwartz was on a ru n and the
question seemed to be. who wou ldtake the seco nd place spot be hi nd , u
him? Faria took the wide line a nd
tried to get past Collins on lap one. J
At the end of the lap Collins blocked
him on the outside and maintained
his posi tion. "Flyin " Mike the n switched lines and went to the insi de J
on lap two but Co llins, again, was
eq ual to the challenge.

Jon Boyer, who looked better than
he ever has , had th e lead on the start
from the 10 over Gary H icks and
Billy Hamill. Schwartz got another,
great start and was in the fourth place
spot in turn two. Unfortunatel y.

Fari a kept hi s drive go ing a nd shot
around H icks for second in the first
bend on the second la p . He carried
ri ght up to th e lead er Bo yer and )
everyo ne in th e pl ace expected him
to surge pa st. It wasn 't quite th at ,
easy. The l iS pound Boyer held off
th e 130 pound Faria until turn one (\
o n th e th ird lap befor e he relented..H
Once Faria took the point position,,£
he was gone for good .

he went hard insi de Boyer in th e first
bend. Boyer went down in the path
of Sch wanz. Schwartz slowed to miss .
him and it took him out of contention. Faria was cruising but the battle
