JUNE 26 Tommy Lynch a nd Donnie H arrell topped se r io us co m pe t i t io n at Ba kersfield Speed wa y. The track ready competition was hard and fast. Yamaha-mo un ted Tommy L ynch, usually the man to beat in th e 250cc P ro class, had to ea rn his win to nigh t. Lynch jumped out for an ea rly holesho t only to cra sh in the sweeper bringi ng out the red and the restart. At the wave of the green, R ick Pearce wasted no time ta king' the lead over Lynch, R yan Land, Todd J orgen sen and Jeff Reynolds and the rest of the field. Land moved on Lynch for second, while Jorgensen a nd Reynolds fought for fourth. Reynolds slipped into fourth at the wire behind L ynch's third place finish. Pearce took the heat win with Land second. Reynolds grabbed a n early lead for th e main with Lynch determined for a win. Pearce, Land. Harrell and Jorgensen all diced back and fo rt h for po siti ons. On lap four Pearce and Jorgens en lost contro l in co rner th ree and dropped back. A lap la ter, Land lost his slide and wa s also out. L ynch motored past Reyn olds on the white flag lap to ga in the victory. Reynolds d id make one last attempt to regain at the flag but Lynch wouldn't stand for it. Reyn o lds, H arrell and Gonzal es fini sh ed second, third and fourth, respectively. Donnie H arrell pil oted his WoodRotax powered cycle for a second . pl ace heat fini sh and main event win in th e 500 cc Pro class. Harrell thund ered off th e line only to be put back to the penalty line for a restart. Harrell still managed to maneuver around the field to gai n a brief lead in the hea t race. Jim Rosa slipped un derneath Harrell to lea d th e remainder of the heat, a nd claim pole position for th e main. Kirby Shropshire, Mike Hale, and Jim Hestily all fought for third-fifth positions. Hale sho t out of corner four duri ng lap three to take third fro m Shropshire. Hestily lost fifth to Tim Clark o n th e whi te £lag lap, as Clark poured it on com ing down th e stra igh t. Hestil y wheelied for th e holeshot in th e main event, but Clark powered past him at th e straight. Harrell also moved by Hestily and was set on th e lead. Clark led for three la ps unti l Harrell rocket ed by for th e main even t win. Ro sa also stalked Clark and passed him for the second place finish. By ~.ike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JUNE 26 John Dauth finally put together a successful even ing of motocross at the Baylands facility and scored th e Open Pro clas s win. ' . In th e first moto Da u th powered to an early lead and never reall y showed concern a bo ut th e pressure beginning to develop behind from Gary. Fargo a nd Greg Pennington. It was Pe nnington that stayed with Dauth the longest and he did earn a second place fini sh behind Dauth in the mota. In th e second moto of th e Open Pro class it was Pennington off the lin e first with Dauth and the field of three trailing th em. As th e long moto wor e o n it a ppea red th at Dauth was going to settle for a second, but Dauth reeled in Pennington a nd took th e mot o win , scoring h is first double mo to victory this year. Pen ning ton held o n for second a nd took second overa ll. The 250cc Junior division even t wa s a s u r p r ise for both riders inv olv ed in th e battle for th e overall victory. In th e fir st moto it was a fair start for Paul Midson, who was about third into th e first corner and running near Mike T erk elsen and Mar c Pennings, bot h o n Ho ndas. Mid son then worked hi s way into th e lead a nd at the checkers it was Midson breathing easier with a first pl ace under hi s kidney belt. R un n ing seco nd after having fought his wa y through co ns idera ble traffic , wa s T ed Pippin. In th e second moto it was a horrid start for Midson a nd a great one for P ip p i n a n d T erkelsen . Midson Ray West topped the 250cc class and fin ished second in the 500cc race during short track action at Virginia State Fairgrounds. work ed hi s wa y up and trail ed Pippin for th e last three laps, bu t ap pea red unabl e to pa ss him. In th e last few yards before the chec kers a back marker go t o u t of shape o n th e landing side of th e tabl etop jUJ!lP, and Pippin hi t his ma chine a nd got sideways , but didn 't go down. Jeff Topper IHu sl. 2: Rogers, West top RichmondST By Joe Kelly RICHMOND, VA, J UNE 24 Ra y West and Rusty Rogers traded wins a nd seconds in th e 250 and 500cc classes o n th e quarter-mile oval a t Vir gina State Fairgrounds, West won th e 250cc race and was followed home by Rogers in seco nd, whil e Rogers topped the 500cc co ntes t with West traili ng in the runner-up spot. West, aboard a Kawasa ki, led every lap in the first 250cc qua lifi er while Ro gers hounded his rear wh eel o n hi s Suzuki. Bill y Ellis and Jay Williams had a good battle going for third , and it was settled a t th e flag with Ellis in front. . Things were reversed in the second heat. Rogers had as much as he could handle holding off rep eated charges by West. The run for' third was, again , a hard one, with' Williams claiming th e spot. Wh en th e light £lashed in th e main, Rogers took co mmand. H e held on for two laps, then bobbled and West went by. Ellis went out on th e fifth lap, while Williams and Wayn e Eckert rode almost as one rid• er, contesting th e number three position. Eckert. in h is frenzy to get by, went down on th e seventh lap , bringing out the red flag. The referee ca lled it a race. West had first , Rogers and Williams followed. It appeared Harley-Davidson . rid er Rogers had th e first 500cc qualifier in th e bag, but on the last turn of the last lap West passed him on the outside. Ellis, riding a Honda, fini sh ed a close third. The second heat had a d ifferent end ing wi th Rogers finishing half a wheel a head of West. Ellis again · finished th ird. Rogers was clearly pumped u p for th e main. H e got the lead off the line and was never headed.
