Canoy claims Glen Helen GP By David Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, J UNE2l The CRC crew presented a well prep ared Grand Pri x course at Gl en Helen, th at was con ti n ually watered down keeping the dust to a minimum and the action to a maximum. Ciaig Ca noy li ked the track as he topped the combined Pro / Intermedia te race. ' oWhen th e flag dropped for the combi ned P ro / Intermed iate race, Kurt Sofka piloted h is Open class bike into the first tu rn a head of th e pack. Ken Zah rt o n a Honda CR250 was next and was being chased by Jon Ortn er riding a H o nda CR500. On lap two the positions ch a nged with Zah rt now leading Sarka and Canoy who had a ninth p lace start, but was now in to third on hi s Honda GR 125. Ortner was holding onto fourth place, . but was being challenged by Pro Cycle's Todd Campbell on a 250 KTM. As the race progressed Zahrt (who had wo n th e Vet race earlier) started to tire and Campbell got by Zahrt and Sofka and was now running a strong seco nd. O ut in' fron t with a very comfortable lead was O ' Nea lbacked Canoy, who was styling and doing fu ll -lock cross-u ps over th e tabletops. Ortner wa s n o t ' bein g Hounded by Honda-mounted J erry Black who came on strong in th e second half of the race and now was in second 250cc position. t Ortn er a nd Black stuc k together with Black trying different li nes to get around Ortner, bu t the 250 was no ma tch for a 500 on a co urse with long straights like Gl en H elen . As the race came to a close Canoy pulled a fifth gear whee lie past the checkers wit h Ca mpbell claiming th e 250cc wi n and O rtn er th e 500cc Class. The Intermediate 500cc win went to Kell y Do yle while the l25cc Intermed ia te winner was none other th an CR C' s own Jeff Barbacovi with J ohn R udder closing in after a bad start. Racin mak es a seven -hour trip from O h io o n a weekly basis to find some of the on ly speedway competition on the East Coas t. Racin came o ut smoking in his Division One Scratch heat, blow in g a way Dal e Wakefie ld a n d two Can ad ian s, John Kehoe a nd John Dm ytrow . Wak efield picked up the second spot a nd made th e semi tra nsfer wit h Racin, Sem i number o ne saw some bumps and grinds as Racin and T om Burge got together while racing for po sit ion in turn o ne. Bot h riders hung on, but th e unfortunate casualt y was Steve Wa tson who go t bumped as well and went down. Racin a nd Burge each transferred int o th e main.
