Kawasaki-m ounted Shawn H uggins blasted to th e lead in th e first ' 125cc A class m oto, whi le Chad Pederson and Bolten stayed close behind. Huggins started to p ull away fro m th e pack on lap two, but he sp u n out, han ding h IS lead to Pederson . Pederson poured on the gas and started edging away fro m Bolten , bu t Pederson slid out just before the whoop sectio n. Bo lte n q u ickly inhe ri ted the lead wi th Dave Alex.- a nder a t his heels . By th is time H uggins had recovered eno ugh time to have th e leaders in sigh t. Alex a nder began to fad e from the heat , a nd Huggins took over second as , Bolten went on to wi n by a comfo rtable ma rgin. In moto two Huggins again took the holesh ot , wi th Bo lten an d Ped erson right be hind. These riders went the en tire mota on ly inc hes apart. With on ly a few turns to go, Huggins ' go t sidewa ys and both Bolte n a nd Ped erson sn uc k by fo r first a n d second. In the 250cc A class, Huggins took th e hol esh o t, but Greg Wurster edge d by o n the first lap. Bolten also found hi s way around Huggin s a nd went aft er Wurster, po wering by on lap six for th e win. In mo to two Huggins aga in took th e hol esho t, bu t Brad Jones went wide in turn one and slipped around th e o utside for the lead . Wu rster fou nd h is way around Bol ten on the second lap to begin to challen ge J ones. A lap la ter Wurster developed mech anical problems and was ou t of th e race , Bolten chas ed J ones for th e rest of th e mot o wh ile Huggins tri ed to ca tch up after a fall. J ones took th e moto win, but Bolten got the overa ll with a I -2 finish. Jerry Craf t used h is 500 Honda to take a bi g hol esh ot in the Over 25 class. Don Damen and th e rest of th e pack were glued to th e rear fender of Craft's bike. Craft bobbled and both Da m en a n d R on Si moto n flashed by, but Simoton dropped o u t two laps la ter, putting Craft back in seco nd. Jim Sears put his scoo ter into overdrive and worked his way past Craft for second. In th e second round, Craft sail ed his big H onda to the fro nt with Da m en o nce aga i n in se co n d . Simoton moved up to challenge Damen and overtook him o n lap two then , mome nts lat er Si moton cras hed an d Da m en took ov er ' second. Also in a tte nda nce today were the cur rent points-leading team of Bob Sch noor a nd Randy La ngos h on a n EML r ig a n d a large fie ld o f challe ngers. In moto o ne Sch noor a nd Langosh too k th e holesh ot with the Whi tney / Wh it ney tea m a very close second. Running third on a 750 Yamahapowered EML was the tea m of Chris ' J ohn so n and Kris Wilcox. As the racers so rted themse lves o u t the W hi tn ey / W h i tn ey tea m worked their EML u p past the Sch noor/ La ngosh team and into the lead. Coming o ut of th e pack to take o ver the n umb er three slo t were Clyde Stewart an d Brett Willia ms on a H onda CR500-engi ne EML. At the halfway point in moto o ne Sch noor and Lan gosh were a tte mp ting to pu t a move on the Wh itney/ Wh itney team whe n th eir big-b ore Honda seized a nd th ey DN F. A heat ed ba ttle for second a nd thi rd was taki ng p lace wi th Stewart and William s being cha lle nged by Du ane McDo well a nd Ram sey Harri s o n a n Englis h-ma de Wasp powered by a big-bore H onda two-stro ke. T he McDowell /Ha rri s team p ushed hard a nd was soon into second behind th e Wh itney/Whitney team a nd as the checkered flag came o ut on th e next lap , the or der remained the same. In mot o two the ac tio n sta rted a t th e d rop of the flag with a th ree-bike, side-b y-side drag race to see who wo uld get the holesh o t. The Wh itney/Whi tn ey, Sc h noo r/ L a n gos h a n d R a lph Whitn ey a n d J o hn Beam es tea ms bumped and pushed each o ther up to th e o uter lim its of con tro l, with the Whitney/Whi tn ey EML com ing o u t a hea d . The Sch noor/ La ngosh EML was ho t o n th eir tai l and the two teams p ulled away from th e pa ck. T he Eric Whi tn ey/J eff Anders tea m pushed hard and were soon beh ind the Wh itney and Beames duo. McD owell a n d H arris followed Wh itn ey a nd Beams' path th rough traffic a nd it became a th ree-way race for th ird p lace as the Whi tn ey/ Anders crew join ed in th e chase. Hard cont ac t between the teams let the Whitney/An ders EML m ov e ah ead of Whitney a nd Beams. This lead lasted half a lap before the Whitney/Ander s duo ov ershot a corner giving th ird back to Whi tney a nd Beams. Sweeten and Olsen posted I-I ri des to wi n th e 125 a nd 250cc Pro classes, respec tively. T he day's shocker came in the first 125cc Pro co ntes t when non- p ro T on y Graves domina ted th e eig h tlap per while riding exhi bitio n. He held off cha rges from O lsen , who finish ed second, and third p lace Gary Beyer. Ol son dom in at ed m oto tw o. Graves rode well , but cou ldn 't repeat hi s first rnoto performance. With th e moto win, Ol sen pocketed $40. Beyer took second (2-2) wh ile third overa ll went to Cra ig Lambert . I Sweeten led H onda-mounted Don Biscegli a a nd Graves in the fir st 250cc Pro mo ta . Sweeten was in full con tro l until Graves p icked hi s way throug h traffic a nd was set to give the 1-2 Produo a run for their money. Sweete n came back to top m o to two, good for top money. Bisceglia was second after 2-2 rides. Controversy arose in severa l classes du e to a rule change which said riders ca n mov e down to a low er class H they choose. Two suc h riders had the co m pet itio n in a n uproar. Wayne Church , an ex-Pro a nd Dan Math is, who is a to p-notch Int erm edi a te, went 1-2 in the 250cc Junior cla ss. Ch urch pos ted I-I rides o n hi s Kawasak i to notch th e o verall despite cries of o u trage fro m ride rs an d severa l pa rents. Following Ch urch hom e in both mo tos was Yam ahamounted Ma th is. Math is used a 22 for second, wh ile the first legitima te Jun ior to finish ,was Terry H amness aboard a Kawasaki. H am ness went 4-3 for thi rd a hea d of J erem y Skokan a nd Ron Weslake. . The 125cc Junior class was much th e same. After wa tching Mathis totall y dominate th e second mo ta , m an y as ked w he the r o r no t tlie Yam aha p il ot sho u ld be in th e Ju n io r ra n ks. , ,l . The first mot o saw Mathis with his hands full in a battle with Suzuki rider J ason Crandell. Crandell rode a su pe rb mo to while Mathis was close behind. 1 In the second contest, Mathis wa s way o u t front. H e used a 2-1 tall y to net hi s o nly overall of th e day.
