"I read MOTORCYCLIST and DIRT RIDER to find out ""hat the people lNho really ride bikes are thinking, doing, and ~aying." -Mary McGee son Chris is.racing motocross and speedway in California." Views on racing: "It was exciting, challenging, interesting, and sometimes just downright tiring. The hardest thing abou t giving up racing is what do you do for that excitement? When all that stops, it's real hard to replace it." PHOTO: DOUG STEWAR T Name: Mary McGee Occupation: Sales/Marketing Consultant, Edmonds, Washington; retired racer Professional background: "I was riding motocross andlong-distance off-road events for Husqvarna in the late ยท'60s, so I went to work for them as district sales rep for 13 western states. In 1975, I became western advertising manager for MOTORCYCLIST and then moved to Road Rider and later Mini Truck as advertising director." Riding and racing history: "My first bike was a Triumph Tiger Cub, and I later bought the first Honda C lIO in Phoenix, Arizona. When we moved to California, Vasek Polak talked me into roadracing, and I rode a 125cc Honda for four years. I also started racing cars around 1959. I raced Porsche Spyders for Vasek and was SCCA Cal Club Pacific Coast Champion (over-16OOcc class) in the early '60s . I also raced cars offroad, driving for Datsun in the PHOTO: SHEILA PANORI first Baja 1000 in 1967. I did my last one for Toyota in 1975. Some car-racing friends who also rode motorcycles-Steve McQueen and Dave and Bud Ekins-spersuaded me to try a dirt bike, and it was like I'd finally found the thing I liked to do best. By the time the Baja 500 came along in 1969, I did it on a motorcycle. Motocross started over here about 1966, and when Wes Cooley, Sr. put on the first one out at Castaic Junction, I was one of about 40 people who showed up. I rode my last Baja 500 solo in 1975 and then started doing roadraces for MOTORCYcLIsT. My riding now consists of touring and trail riding, but my Views on motorcycling: " Motorcycling offers freedom , challenge, and excitement. Motorcycle riders are a cut above; they show more determination in life, more creativity and independence. I think those are the qualities that put them on a bike in the first place." Magazines: "I read MOTORCY CLIST and D IRT RIDER to find out what the people who really ride bikes are thinking, doing, and saying., As a bystander looking in on the racing scene now, I enjoy the view both magazines give me into other people's lives. I like to keep up on who's doing what, how the bikes and equipment are changing, and how motorcycling continues to evolve as a very exciting sport. MOTORCYCLIST and DIRT RIDER let me.do that better than anything else."
