Cowan cruises at Riverside ST By Loren & Barbara Williams TRAVELERS REST, SC, MAY 22 Honda-mounted Tommy Cowan dominated Open class short track' competition today at Riverside Speedw.ay, besting fellow Honda pIlot KlTk Hayes and Yamaha rider Kenneth Barr. ~wan put his Bill Polly Honda out 10 front of both his qualifying heat race and the Open class main event and refused to allow anyone to power around him on Riverside's 3/8-mile oval: Cowan, Barr and Hayes blasted off the line, in that order, at the stan of the qualifier, and settled into a three-way battle at the head of the pack. Cowan battled with Barr while ~yes. hung back to scope out the sltuauon. Hayes found the perfect place to pass Barr, then zinged into second, just behind Cowen. Barr was not so easily put off and the trio powered across. the line, almost together. The main event was almost a replay of the .qu~lifier, with Hayes and Barr SWItch 109 places. Given another half a lap, Hayes looked as if he might have passed Cowan, but the checkers fell too soon for the Jim's Cycle Sales-sponsored Tennessee rider. The $50 class this week was the 250cc Novice division, and Hondamounted Gary Dalton earned the m~>ney after a hard-fought battle with KTM pilot John Collins Honda rider Marty Babb and Tony Rhodes. The four competitors in the 125cc Amateur class were all mounted on Yamaha YZS, and for much of the main event a photographer could have captured them all in the same photo frame. Chris TUl;kers of Cashiers took the win aboard his Highland Auto Parts-sponsored Yamaha, finishing ahead of Berea Cycles-sponsored Tim Laskis, Allen Barnes and Yamaha Corral/Andrews Racing's Craig Johnson.
