SPRINGFIELD, IL, MAY 23 The Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association's Memorial Day weekend, which featured the Springfield Mile on Sunday, began with Saturday night's P.l's Cycle ProduclS/ Tsubaki-sponsored Springfield Shon Track Shoot-Out, a round of the AMA Regional Championship Dirt Track Series. The Expert and Junior class finals were won by Camidians Jon Cornwell and Steve Aseltine, respectively, while California Mike McDonnell captured the win in the Pro-Am class. Pro-Am heat wins went lO Kevin Atherton, -Mike Pauerson, McDonnell and Phil Jones. The six Junior heats fell lO Aseltine Kris Kiser, Randy Feldhaus, Sco~t Saunders, Darrell Davis and Chance Darling. The Expert healS were won by Cornwell, Tim Mertens, Dave Hebb, Chad Felicio:Dave Durelle and Steve Kasten. WashinglOn's Darrell Davis ra!1 away with the first Junior se~,. ahead of a close race between KrIS Kiser and Craig Johnson. The second semi was another runaway for Aseltine 'over Jon Nunez and Erik Graybeal. The first Expen semi was unevent[ul as Cornwell led Don Estep and Dave Hebb from start to finish. The second semi was anything but uneventful as first Mertens, Kasten and Billy Herndon were sem lo the penally line. Tum three o[ lap one saw Kasten, Herndon and Scott Adams falling hard, bringing out the red £lag. either Kasten nor Adams were able to make the restart. Felicio ran away with the restart while Mertens charged 0[[ the penalty line into second tben held of[ rookie Expen Bryan McDowell in a tight battle [or second. The trophy dash was a three-man race with Cornwell, Mertens and Felicio running in close order while Hebb circled with a badly smoking engine. Felicio came out on top over Cornwell. Alan Powers led the Pro-Am final for eight laps until McDonnell put his Harry Lillie/Arai/L&:M Leathers/Tracey Muf£1er/Jimmy Odom/ Freddies Speed Be SponlEl-I Car Care-sponsored Harley into the lead. Kevin Atherton, riding his last race as a Pro-Am rider, also moved by and the final positions were set. Aseltine pushed his Cougar Gully Distilling/Panther Frames/Deeley H-D/BBRP/Castrol/Holz Trailers/ ShoeilLillie RBeD/Tsubaki/Nymo Plates-backed Harley to the front o[ the Junior main only to see Graybeal, Feldhaus and Dave Rayburn fall on lap six, bringing out the red £lag. DaVIS grabbed the lead on the restart but Aseltine stormed back into the lead. The race was then all Aseltine's as he led Davis and Craig Johnson in. Fresh [rom his trophy dash win, Felicio shot into the lead o[ the Expert main with Cornwell, Mertens and Estep close behind. Mechanical problems ended Estep's ride on lap three_ Cornwell got by Felicio on lap seven and puned away. The action was now back in third through sixth. Billy Herndon's night was over when he [ell in turn one on lap 10. Mertens had started lo fade with McDowell moving imo tJ:1ird. Rich Kin$ was held up behind Mertens but shpped by on lap 13. Knuth scores at ·Wapella Scrambles By Bill Holt BLOOMINGTON, IL, MAY 17 Rick Knuth rode his Joe Evans Const.lSprocket Spec.lDiamond/ DC Cycle-backed Rotax right imo the victory circle at the Bloomington-Normal M.C.'s season opening scrambles at Wapella. The 10th round o[ the DC Cycle/ Super Seer/Banzai Bros.-sponsored AMA District 17 Dirt Track Championship Series saw 500cc ~~at winners Knuth and Reed Beruhno sitting side-by-side on the [rom row of the main event, but they weren't alone during the event. Knuth t~k the high, fast line through the first turn to grab the lead and from there held off the best riders in the state for the victory. Davy Knowles, Bertilino and Bart Schmulbach made it a four-rider battle throughout, with anyone having more than one chance at the win. At the checkers Knuth's style overcame the pressure o[ the pack [or the win. The 50cc class started off the late program and it was Nick Spierowski who ran away to the win. The real battle was for second between Shane Garrison, Jess Robinson and Shannon Wright with the race ending that way. In the 80cc final Steve Hall grabbed the win holding 0[[ Shane Sornson and Ben Varnes. Brian Detweiler was the class o[ the 200Cc ranks, holding 0[[ Man Collier and Greg Vogel for the win. In the 400's Mike Tipton came back from a disappointing heat to put his Rickman CZ in the winner's circle in [ront o[ Bob Collier's Suzie's Beauty Shop-backed Honda and Mark Augustine. Todd Williamson grabbed the holeshot in the 250cc final and was never headed. Schmulbach kept it close in the second spot holding of[ Eddie Hauptman and Danny Carter. The real surprise o[ the day was in the Senior class. Bob Collier jumped out to a quick lead, but motor trouble sidehned him early. That left Dave Stanfield in the lead with Triumph-mounted Gary Brennan behind him holdin~ of[ Les Eslinger, who was also havmg motor problems_ The checkers saw Stanfield take his first-ever win in the Senior class with Brennan holding on [or second. Barrow triples at Princeton ST By Karen Lewis PRINCETON, KY, MAY 9 Ninety riders were on hand [or shon track action tonight at PrincelOn and Joel Barrow was the man to beaL Barrow swept lo wins in the 80, 125 and 200cc mains. Barrow left Chris Boone to 3rgue with Mike Baker [or second in the 80cc class, and it was Boone copping the runner-up spot at the £lag. Barrow also disappeared in the 200cc final with a big win. A good battle went on [or second with Buddy Akers nippin~ Mike Voss and Jimmy Allen at the hne. Barrow continued his string of holeshots in the 125cc final and cruised in lo take his third win of the night. Eddie Reagor came of[ t!te penalty line lo take second whl~e Brian Dowell out-gunned RobbIe Grief and Chuck Allen for third. Denne Williams ran away with the 250cc final while Jim Breidenbach came out of a [our-rider pack to c1aim on easy ~ond. Kevin. \yoodruff claimed thud at the hmsh over Charles Fennell and Robbie Grief. Williams made it into the winner's circle twice by also taking the Open class win. Charles Southgate kept the heat on and ran to second ahead o[ David Flowers and Andy Richardson. Joshua KnOll took the A';ltomatic win with a {lag-to-£lag nde. Jon Camp pressured him the emire distance with Beau Braswell, Jason Goodwin and Jason Morris rounding out the top five. Roy Hart won the Amateur main over James Hart and Jim Smith while Aaron Ladd ran away with the 65cc final. Boone, Jarrod Barrow and Camp followed him across the line. Results AUTO: 1.
