Roger s controls Richmond ST By Joe Kelly 38 RI CHMOND, VA, MAY 13 T he Vi rgi nia Sta te Fai rgrounds weekly short track motor cycle racin g program played host to 46 riders from a three sta te ar ea - Virginia, Maryl and a n d North Carol ina . Rusty Rogers proved to be the fastest rider of th e eveni ng as he took th e 2S0 and SO class wins. Occ Rogers, aboa rd a Suzuki, won th e first 2S0cc qual ifier. Ear ly pacesetter o n a H onda, Ch ris 'Rickma n, gave a spi rited chase and hung close, less th an a bike length back, but second was all he cou ld muster. The second 2S0cc head was th e better contes ted even t. Robert Lewis rode his H onda to th e fron t, but on the second circui t Bill y Ellis, also o n a H onda, ma de a pass o n the ou tside to take th e lead. Ell is barely held first until th e last tu rn of the last la p. Lewis regained the lead and the victory. T he feature was all Rogers, but he had to work to main tain th e lead in the early goi ng. Ri ckm an h ung on close to th e leader, bu t cou ldn' t get the drive he needed to get around. Ellis ma de use of a R ickm an bobb le on lap eigh t to take second position . Ellis closed on Rogers, but cou ld only ga rner the runner-up spot. Rogers had a great n igh t, wi nni ng every race he entered. Cla yton Oliver rode a Honda to a strong second in bo th h eats , ' but h ad a struggle holdin g off th e persistent Rickman. As th e light turned Green in the mai n , Rogers bolted into th e lead wit h Oliver in tow . Both rid ers were close until the half-way mark, then Ell is, aboa rd a Wood-Rotax , go t by Oliver. The two rode in tight format ion for th e next three laps, but Ellis went hom e with second at th e checkers. J ohn Nickens won a match race over Chris Copley in th e SOcc comp eti tion. T hen Nic ken s reall y showed hi s skill by holding off Brian Strong and Mik e"Hacker in th e 60cc main. Stro ng .carne back to lead Nicken s acro ss the lin e in the 80cc fin al. Results 250: 1. Weaver wins PRMC Hillclimb opener By Paul Hayes WESTVILLE, IL, MAY 2 T im Weaver riding a Kaw asak i took top honors in the 200cc cla ss at th e Pl easure Riders M.e. Hilldimb. This event was th e seaso n opener for th e AMAIDistrict-17 series. It was al so round two for D-I S. Weaver had hi s best ride o n hi s second attempt. H e climbed th e li S foot hill in 44.782 seconds. H e is th e" curre n t AMA National number one rider in the 200cc class, as well as D-IS 's hillclimb referee. Sam Blakeney , last year's D-17 number on e rider fini shed second with a 4.90S ride. Ed Scot t made it a Kaw asak i sweep by finishin g third with a SS.432 pass. The 400cc class rival continued from last year. Kaleb Northrup had a seaso n long battle with Ll oyd H aas. At the end of th e year it was H aa s on LOp. This year No rt hrup started ou t with the class win. H IS IT400 posted the best time on his fin al attempt - a 3.928 climb. H aas was a little slower with a first rou nd run of 4.000. H e was also o n a Yamaha. The Maico of Ri ck Royce carri ed him to thi rd overall wit h a 4.0S9 climb. Alan Hoskins climbed to the top of the SO class to earn the overall. Occ His best try of 3.648 was do ne in round two , on a Yamaha. H onda rider Scott Pearson 's first pass of 3.791 held up for second place. Ri ck Ro yce climbed to an other third pl ace fini sh , this time on a Yam aha. H is best tim e was 3.8S0. In th e 7S0cc class, it was th e British iron com ing ou t on top. Steve J on es riding a Triumph, onl y wentl1 4 feet on hi s first try. H e came back stro ng in ro und two to post a 3.S63 run for th e win . Chuck Selda l " Mr. Mail man," riding a Kawasaki had his best run durin g th e last ro und. He brok e through th e timing lights a t 4.470. Tim Weaver ro unded out the top three with a 4.747 run o n a Honda. This was his first tim e riding th e bi gger bores. COAL VAL L EY, IL, MAY 3 Beta -mounted Phillip Zimmer riding for Kawt own Kaw asak i, took th e Junior class win duringround two of the AMA/District-17 Trials serie s. The event was held by th e Tri-City M.e. ... Zimmer lost 3S poin ts en route to hi s cla ss win . This was hi s second win of th e seaso n. Sta n Bloniarz and Jim Em erson were tied at th e end of the trials. Bloniarz on- a H onda earne d second overa ll from th e tie breaker. Emerson was on a Fantic.· The Expert class was won again by D-I T s top trials rider , Da ve Rohrschneider. H e took eight dab s durin g the run and is spo nsored by TMI and r ides a Fan ti c, Zigi J edymak on a Honda finished a close second with a loss of nine marks. Fantic rider Jim Altemus ended th e da y with 27 for third place. Jim Ri pper als o took the overall for th e second tim e in as many weeks. His victory came in th e Novice class. Ripper riding a SWM had a score of 266. Don Lopatka finished second on a Yamaha with 37. Chuck Ellis J r. rounded out the top three spo ts with a SI, riding a Beta. The Enduro clas s was smoked by Dave Sackett. H e had a total of 14 points by the day 's end. H is closest competitor, Bill McCullough carded a 44 as did Doug Morse. Bast blasts Baylands Speedway By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CA, MAY 7 No rt hern Cal if orn ia Speedwa y Ch ampion Bart Bast opened up th e Baylands Speedway seaso n o n the right note winning th e Scratch main in fine style over John Coo k and Eddie Ingels. It was a sta nda rd "Class A" program that greeted th e S6 riders and nearl y 2000 open ing n ight fans. In gel s sta rted off with th e first Handicap heat win over Steve Crawford a nd Ro ck y Robinson wh ile T eam Vooch 's J ohn Volk beat o u t Mik e Solis and Jim Sisemore in hea t two. Greg Martz topped the third heat over Mike Pa rsons and Coo k, in typi cal form, taking th e fin al heat win over Bobb y Hi cks. T he semi had In gels and Cook the big win ners , while th e main even t was a different story. H icks had fin ished second to Cook by mere inches in th e heat and had a great start for th e main. With mostl y deep , yardage rid ers, H icks was go ne and o nly Coo k cou ld catch up by th e last la p. On the insi de lin e, Coo k set him u p fo r the pass, bu t H icks had already set th e line and the former English league racer had to back off and ta ke second in th e drag race to th e lin e. In gels held off Par sons for th e th ird round while Bast was q uickest in his heat, tak in g the wi n over Robinson in the fina l hea l. Coo k made a mockery of the first semi, going from last to first in less tha n a la p to score th e win over Martin. Ingels held th e lin e for thi rd ahead of Bast. Bast sho wed up late for th e main event draw, but made it work for him as th e last SIOl was th e pol e and he used it to hi s advantage ge tting a perfect start and a very showy win. Ingels took second in fin e style over Cook and Robinson. Mik e Kun sman topped th e Division Two main after winning his heat in hi s first compe titive attemp t. In both mOlOS, IS-year-old Derrick Sims of Cedar Hill led th e first two laps on ly to be passed by Riddle on th e third lap of th e five-lap motos. Sims tried every line that his stout runnin g Kawasaki would allow to get under and around Riddle but could do not better than a 2-2 for th e eveni ng.
