Coleman cooks at Frozen Ocean MX .By David Denman AUBURN, NY, MAY 3 Kawasaki rid er Chris Col em an topped the 125cc and O pen Expert cla sses at the first round of th e Pepsi/ PCX Radio-sponsored MX Series at Frozen Ocean Motocross Park. A $2000 purse in the Expert divi sions had top riders battling from th e mom ent the ga te dropped until th e checkered flag. In th e Open Expert class 1986 points cha m pion Troy Bradshaw used consistent rid es in both motos to place second behind Co lema n. Coleman worked through th e pack and into th e lead midway th rough both rnot os , th en cruised to th e ove ra ll victory. Gl en N ichol so n pulled th e first moto hol esh ot , but finished two-five, fou rth for the day. In th e 125cc Expert class. Jimmy Woolridge and Paul Au stin ran awa y from the pack in a fierce battle for th e lead for half of th e first rnoto. When Austin fell at the 12 minute mark, the hard- charging Coleman filled the top slot and pr essured Woolridge for the last two laps. In th e second moto Coleman and Wool ridge pulled away from th e pack early. Col eman eventually pulled o u t to a 12-second lead midway through the moto and cruised to the victory. Twenty-eight 250cc Expert rid ers 'g o t a good view of Steve Hess' rear fender early in the race. The Kawa saki rider kept bui lding to his lead following perfect holesho ts in both motos. MAY 15 Team Yama ha rider Robbie T aylor tromped his competition in both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes today at th e Stepp Mill MX. David Reynolds got a so-so start in the 125cc ra ce, and was forced to follow Ta ylo r' s YZ, despite hi s extreme ly agile efforts aboa rd the Dal-Kawa spo nsored Suzuki. Except for a lat e lap sp in-ou t, Reynolds stayed right on T aylor 's rear fender, matching flight for fli ght, an d plowing through the co rne rs with eq ua l pow er , but ' he had to be satisfied with second. In th e 250cc class. it was simply no contest. Taylor whi pped h is b ig bik e into th e first turn and was go ne . despi te th e best efforts of KX-rider T odd Ulmer. Oehrle is deliberate. calcula ting and precise, li ke a su rgeo n. He carefu lly pic ks his lines th en execu tes th em with com pu ter efficiency. H e is a master of balancing, pullbacks and hop-turns. Farl er relies o n brute strength and speed like a bulldozer opera tor. H e beats th e sectio n into submis sio n. H e finds traction wh ere ot hers gri nd to a halt. Bill G all ow av, Ray William s, T odd Welch and Rovce Klein laid ou t nine sectio ns th at 'were intended to be fun and challengin g. Veeder came back and won the 250cc Expert fin al with Craig EsteIle gra bbing seco nd and Conrad Parsna il thi rd. Man y of the O pen riders have 250s and it looks as if no one will be able to cherry pic k for a few easy bu cks. The actio n in th e Senior A class was not exactly in keep ing with th e advanced age of the riders, as Carl Na bi nger £logged hi s 250 to the win over Ken Coolbeth and Dave Scheffer on thei r Open class bikes.
