Senate subcommittee hearing on the effectiveness of the Consumer P roduct Safety Commission , Senator Albert Gore .Jr., (D -TN), cha irman of the Commerce Science and Transportation Subcommittee on the Consumer, used ATV statistics to "prove" that the CPSC is ig n o rin g its responsibility to protect American consumers. "Injuries associated with ATVs are staggering:' Gore said. "Half of those killed or inju re d are children . Given the CPSC's current lack of leadership, it is hardly surprising that efforts to develop voluntary standards within the ATV industry have been such a disaster. These and other serious problems at the agency cause me to question whether the current structure of the agency shou ld remain in place." Gore referred to a Consumer Federation of America report which said CPSC failings have resulted in : maimed and dead children; consumer product litigation; disability and health insurance expenditures; and lost wages. "This is not what congress intended and it will not be tolerated," Gore said. Gore is one of several Democrats run- . ning for president.
