Alt hough th e track did not become dusty, itdid test the riders endurance. Joe Martin showed he had th e ability to ride in deep sand as he won th e Open Novice class . In moto one Martin worked his way forward after a midpack start while Scott Hall diced with David Hurlburt for second; meanwhile, John Young led th e way. On lap four Young dropped back . suddenly, opening th e door for Hall and Hurlburt to step into first and second. Meanwhile, Martin stormed by fourth-placed Doug Orser a nd Young. Martin began to pressure Hurlburt, but time ran out for Martin as he co uld only follow H all a nd Hurlburt across the finish lin e. Young cla imed fourt h wi th Orser hot o n his tail. Moto two had Martin in th~ front by lap two as Orser gave chase through the sa n d whoops. H all forged ahea d to -third whi le battling with Young in fourth. Mar tin pulled ou t a slight lead by th e fini sh a nd Orser maintained second with Hall holdin g off Young to the end. Hurlburt fail ed to break th e top lOin moto two. Senior Mini acti on in moto one had Scott Eggleton hol eshot a nd Andy Brooks right behi nd. Mike Panko a nd Bret Leonard diced in fourth with Panko blasting by on lap three. Eggleton pulled o ut a bi g lead while Panko tried to catch Brooks. Then Panko dropped back and Leonard ch a lle n ge d him a n d repassed him on lap seven . ' Panko sought revenge in moto two by grabbing the holeshot. But his revenge would have to wait as Eggleton took the lead and never looked back. Pan ko followed wi th a fierce battle for th ird between Brooks a ~~ Leonard. Brooks dropped back, glYmg Leonard third. Eggleton went on to wm WIth Panko taking a secure seco nd. Also back from the west was Erik Graybeal to tak e th e Junior main while Marc Gifford rode his 250cc Honda into the Pro -Am winner's circle . T he wea the r was near perfect for the on ly H enry race of 1987 and time trials proceeded right on time. Greg Wagenknecht usedthe hi gh line to se t fa st E x pert tim e while Jim Haup.tman started ';in eventful day f? r himself by settm g fast Junior ti me. There were four Pro-Am heats with wins go ing to Todd Booten Frank Kiser, Marc Gifford and Greg Joop. In the first Junior heat, pole sitter J im H aup tma n jumped into th e lead on ly to have mechanical problems sidel ine him. Greg Logue took over , and easily led Danny Powell and Vern Bro wne. Graybeal won heat two over Randy Feldhaus and Scott Ro th sch ild. The last hea t fell to Dave Camlin, the battle for second went down to the wire between Jeff Carner, Tom Troudt Jr. and Jim Sumner. Sumner eliminated himself \ on the last lap when he fell in tum two ; Troudt held on for second. The non-qualifying Juniors ·were put into sem is for a las t chance into the final. With his mechanical problems solv ed , Hauptman took a I large lead in semi one. H e held it ! until 50 yards from the checkered flag 1 when he lost control. Bike and rider . , tumbl ed acro ss th e finish line. Fortunately, H auptman was not hit by the following pack of riders. Although shaken he was abl e to walk away, and th e win went to Bill Shoemaker. Danny H ollenback won a tight battle in the second semi taking Jim Sumner wi th him into - the final by way of fastest semi. Greg Wagenknecht put his Harley up in the cushion around Del Beck to win the first Expert heat. Beck held second until a temporary problem dropped him to fourth on the last lap behind Marty Bushman and Steve Steele. Dave Durell e put his 600cc Wood-Rotax in front of heat two aI?d ran aw~y from Mike Farley and BIll Hofmeister. Mertens easily won the last heat over Jon Champlin, who had a good lead over a three-way battle for th e last transfer. Mike Ragan moved from fifth to third on the last lap. The Experts also had two semis' ~i th Del Beck easily winning the first. It was th e fastest and Steve Kasten al so moved into the finalRick Gruber took th e second semi a nd th e line up was set for the Expert main. Kansas Pro-Am Marc Gifford pushed his Motor Cycle Spec/Malcolm Smith/ Alen Stevens/ Ralph Hancock DDS/parents- sponsored Honda into the front of the main ahead of Mark Dolacin, Joe Houpt and John Sommer. A lo t of passing was going on behi nd Gifford as he smoothly went about his business. Dol acin held seco nd until the las t lap when he coasted out of tu rn four. Greg: J ooP steadily moved u p from . an eighth place start and inherited second with his best professional ride to date. Greg Richards led Sommer home in third. Greg Logue took control of the' Junior final and was pulling away when mechanical problems sidelined him on lap four. Graybeal assumed the point on his Shoei/KalGard/WD-40/DC Cycle/Diamond Chain/Sprockets Spec.-sponsored Wood-Rotax. Rand y Feldhaus sta yed close in second with Dave Camlin and Danny Powell a distance back. Mer tens quickly grabbed th e lead in the Expert final with Durelle , Jon Charnpl in and Wa genknecht behind. Attention was soon focu sed on th e lead du o as Durell e closed on Merten s. Durell e tri ed inside and outside but lap after lap Mertens kept his Belleville H onda/ Sh oei /M&M Ra c./Maxi e Shoes -spo nso red, Mike Caves-built Harley in front. Durelle made one last charge to the finish line, but came up half a bike len"gth shor t. Champlin, Wagenknecht and Mart y Bu shman cruised hom e rounding out th e top five.
