Wentzell wails at Delta MX By Mark Montgomery DELT A, OH, APR. 18 J ay Wentzel pic ked up the victory in the 125cc A class Saturday at Delt a. Wen tzel tu rned in a co m ma nding two-moto sweep to clai m th e class hon ors ahea d of Steve Robinson. Wentzel powered h is Kaw asak i past th e field to claim th e hol esh ot Ul moto one of the 125cc A class. T erry Faber held the seco nd position through mos t of the first la p until he was passed by a hard-ch ar ging Robinson. Ro binson fell almost i m me d ia te ly a nd fo u nd h imself chas ing th e back of the pack by the time he remo unte d. Wentzel began to p ull away . as Faber and Terry Ramsey fou ght a heated ba ttle for the run ner-u p position which continued un til Ram sey crashed on la p fo ur: T he checkered flag fou nd Wen tzel comforta bly ou t fro nt, Faber second, Bill Ro bi n son th i rd , whil e h i s bro ther Steve, in a flashy dis p lay of come- fro m -be hin d ridi ng, h ad charged from dead las t to cross the finish li ne in fourth . Moto two saw Wentze l continue to dominate th e start, bu t Steve Rob inson , a lso on a Kawa sa ki , lea ped into first before a single lap had been com pleted. The two leaders left th e field 200 yards behind as th ey staged a private du el fo r four laps of this six- lap mo to. Wen tzel p revai led with a high -speed pass o n a long strai gh t to take th e lead fo r good, claiming th e overa ll wi th a II finish. Steve Robinson earn ed th e second place trophy while Fab er took third. In 250cc A ac tio n, Vern Zweifel took th e moto o ne holesh ot, and spe nt five laps trying to hold off a det ermined a ttack from Yamaha mounted Brett Dewker. While th e cro wd wa tched th e bat tle for first, J ohn Nagada kept hi s thi rd -p lace Kawasak i wit hi n striki ng di stance. While pressin g for th e lead o n th e la st lap, Dewker locked the rear wheel and kill ed hi s engine. Dewker kicked hi s bik e to life while watch ing Zweifel pull away, th en found himself with a new probl em - ho ldi ng off a pers istent Nagada. Bo th riders pulled out all the sto ps and co ncl uded a hotl y-contested fig ht by flyin g past the fin ish lin e, airb orne, less than a foo t apart, with Dewker holding on to second by mere inches. Paul Swenson, wh o had quietl y finis hed fourth in moto one, too k co n tro l of rnoto two from th e start. Nagada success fu lly laid claim to seco n d th is time whil e Dew ker , Zw eifel a n d Mi chae l Schroeder wres tled over third. First and second positi ons never chan ged. Schroeder made a dram a tic pass on a n insi de line during lap five to take con tro l of third place. Swen son's second moto performance helped him garner top honors in hi s class.
