Brian Manley cla imed runaway wins in both the 125 and 250cc Pro divisions at the NMA qua lifier, held at Blythe Raceway. Spangler claims Mid· , Ohio MX win By Bob Eckert LEXINGTON, OH, APR. 19 Over 130 rid ers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Indiana competed in II clas ses at the Mid-Ohio Motorcycle Park on East er Sunday. This was th e first race of Mid-Ohio's four-race Holiday Seri es and almost every class had close raci ng with lots of lead cha nges. The 250cc Open Pro class sa w Dal e Spangler claim hi s th ird stra igh t Pro class win. but not without a dogfigh t. Span gler , Ha rold Robison , J on Agi n, Greg Wh eeler and Dave Hand swa pped positi ons and stayed tigh t for the full 20 m inutes a nd two laps of both mo LOS. The final tall y saw Spa ngler followed by Robi son , Agin , Wh eeler a nd Hand. The 125cc P ro class once aga in offered two moLOS of nip a nd tu ck racin g with Joe Maurer a nd Pennsylvani a's Brett Sa lander joining the previous group. H and nipped Spa ng ler, end ing his wi nn ing streak, with Agin, Maurer and Salender ta king th ird throug h fifth. T he troph y classes offered even more handleb ar-t o-h andl eba r racin g. The 125cc B clas s saw Mik e Wh eeler over Ed Snyder with Mall Kelley in close pursu it . In the 125cc C class, Mike Sn yder aced both mo LOS LO tak e the win over Kur t Kadas and J err y Barl ow. T he 250cc B class ac tion was' pro ba bly th e closes t racing all day wit h Wh eeler edgi ng Bob by Ball inger and Gene Morr ison. Seldom were these first two guys more tha n a bik e len gth apa rt. Barry Kirtl ey led Kurt Kad as and Dennis Armstrong hom e in th e 250cc.C class. Nicholson worked h is way from a six th pl ace stan passin g Deut sch and Steve Gard in er to gain control of th ird. Barnett was o ut front o nce agai n to start the second moto, however, this time Shay wasted littl e time as he we n t pas t the fro nt run ner th rough the second tu rn . After that, it was a pure Shay ru naway. Dale Tay lor took third from Deu tsch m id wa y thro ugh the moto with Gard iner pass ing Deu tsch for fourt h a nd third overa ll. Bill Pi zin o mounted his 250cc Yam ah a a nd grab bed the holes hot to start th e first moto of the 250cc B class . Pizzino was follo wed throug h th e first turn by Ri ck Boep ple , Bob Wea rsh ey a nd Ken Fra nken berrv. Wear shey a nd Fra nkenberry q uic kly passed Boep pl e. Wear shey pressu red Pizzino and by the second lap had tak en control of the LOp spot. Pizzino was not abou t LO give in and the tire to-tire race Ior first ended when Wea rsh ey sta lled hi s bike a la p and a half later, allowing Pizzin o LO rega in first. Wears hey an d Frankenberr y fi nished seco nd an d third , respectively. Pizzin o, Frankenberry and Boeppl e rode through the first turn as the second moto got underway. The 500cc P ros featured a clas h between Eric Marnock a nd Brian Che resh ko ff. Chereshko ff, co ming ou t of a self-im posed three year layoff and rid ing a borrowed bi ke, stayed just a head of Ma rn ock for the entire rno to to p ick u p first. Ma rn och too k moto two as Cheresh ko ff look ed a bit tired. Chereshkoff had fun , th ough , a nd vows to start working o ut a nd get ready for a rene wed ca mpaign. Old friends a nd ri vals were back a t it as ano ther semi-retired rider, J eff Barbacovi, came o ut to co ntes t the 125cc Interm ediat e race wit h bu ddy Bubba Erickson. Runn in g for the 50 bo n us th is ti me was the 250cc Nov ice class, a nd did th ey pu t o n a showl Tony Bridges, on a bra nd new Honda, wo n the quali fier a nd left Steven Edwards seco nd p lace, bu t in the main , second choice of gate was good eno ug h for Edwards, as he got to th e first turn before Bridges a nd never let him past. The two provided p lenty of ac tio n all the wav arou nd the track, but Edwards never let him get his foot in th e door long eno ug h to kick it open , a nd in the end Edwards left 50 richer.
