Faria captures Orange County Spdwy win By Scott Daloisio CO STA MESA, CA, MAY I Mike Faria cap tured hi s second Costa Mesa Scrat ch main even t of the season much to th e delight of a cro wd of over 4000 fan s. O n the H and icap p ortion o f th e pro g ram Scotty Bro wn , of Massil on, Ohio, ca me through for his first win of the year whe n he passed lead er Ma rk Weaver o n the fin al lap. Faria ' s fortunes at the famed' beach -area oval had ch anged drastica lly from the previous week. Seven days earlier a frea k pit area acci de nt cost h im all chances of wi nni ng a ny main events. Faria and rival Bobby Schwartz ha d sp li t th e firs t two mee ti ngs earlie r in th e week. Faria won th e Scra tch main a t IMS while Schwartz d id the same a t Asco t So uth Bay Stadium. On Frida y they faced each o ther o ne time and that was in the four-lap main event. Faria drew th e pole for the ma in and th a t was goi ng to mak e him ha rd to beat. " Smilin ' Mike" go t the ga te ahea d of Bobby Ott, Schwartz and young Ga ry H icks. Ott tri ed to mak e the outside work ear ly on and th at kep t him tight on Fari a's rear tir e over the fir st two lap s. On th e third cir cu it Faria began to o pe n up a lead over Ott and his smoking Godden. Slowly, bu t surely, Faria began to ope n a small lead. Ott kept th e throttle on, but a t race en d Mike Faia (inside) blasts off the line next to Steve Lucero. Faria won Scratch mains at IMS. Costa Mesa and Speedway U.S.A. . that was only able to keep him within twobike len g ths a t the J erry Kingchec kered flag. Third spo t was tak en by Hi cks , w ho n a rro wl y ed ge d Schwart z a t th e line. ' The Ha ndi cap main was a war once again. Red flags stop ped th e action twi ce, but wh en it was all over Brown put th e Shoei /Lou 's Leathers /Circle In d us tries/R K C hain/ Cod y Pro d ucts Jawa into the lead j ust befor e th e end of th e event . Randy Bedd ow set the pace in th e second effort to run the event, but he los t the lead to Weaver. Beddow th en took a soi l sa mp le th at caused several riders to la y it down a nd ou t ca me a no ther re d. Weav er a n d Bro wn , since th ey were in th e first two spots whe n th e red ca rne - ou t, ca me off the 10 for the third start. Weaver gated Brown with Sha wn McConnell running third. Faria , starti ng near th e back, immedi atel y went to the o u tside as they were three laps down and o nly five rem ainin g on that third start . Faria wasn 't finding the needed driv e a nd when he hoo ked up on lap five he dropped back to the fifth sp ot and effecti vely kissed his hopes good bye. Weaver seemed to have the race in th e bag and he took the white flag in th e poi nt position. Coming off turn · two on th e final revolutio n Weaver bobb led. Before he could comp letely recover Brown pounced o n th e o p portu n ity. Weaver was h istory a nd he never mad e it past the line to fin ish th e race. Brown had it in the ba g wh en McConnell hooked up a nd wheeli ed o u t of four. He hit Brown's rear tire, but Brown was able to hold on to score th e win. McC onnell bobbed a n d we aved across th e line for second with Alan Christian taking third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Mike Faria (Jaw ); 2. Bobby On (Gdn); 3 . Gary Hicks (Wos ). HDCP: 1. Faria bounces back for Inland win By Scott Daloisio SAN BER NARDINO, CA, APR. 29 On April 24 "Flyin' Mik e" Faria had 10 leave the races at the Orange Cou nty Fairgrounds d ue to a frea k injury.
