Pete Rickertson (Wes). Castro invades Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio VICTO RVILLE, CA, MAY 2 If you ever want to fin d "Fast" Eddie Castro at Speedway USA j ust look for h im on the outside line. For th e second week in a row Ca stro went to th e extreme o u tside, found some tracti on, a nd wen t on to win th e ei gh t-la p H andicap m ain eve nt. Scratch action was dominated by " Flyin' Mike" Faria. Faria, who missed the seaso n o pe ner th e previous week due to inj uries, won all three of hi s Scra tch races incl uding the mai n even t. On opening night, Ca stro took the win after suffering from the flu for a coup le of days and he tired near the en d of the event: On the second nightof actio n he was fully fit an d that was read ily in evidence as he das hed a way fro m the pack after taking over the point posit ion. Walt Farnum set the ini tial pace'. in the eigh t-la ppet over Scott Bra nt , Jimmie O 'Dell and Bill y H amill. Cas tro quickl y went' to th e ou tside and was bl asting p ast ri ders af ter h is 40-yard line start. Cas tro go t O 'Dell for th ird on lap two and he was pushing the KNAC/ Carlis le/Linetto & H agel /M att' s Machine/ Ara i Wesslake towards th e .. front of the pack. Heading into turn three on the third circu it , Castro mad e a wide sweeping move and got Brant for second. H e the n at tempted to. get around Farn um for the lead in th e same motion . Farnum held tough , but wh en they went down the ' back straigh t on lap four Castro go t the drive and it was clear sai ling from tha t point on. With Castro gone, the battle was on for the minor placings. Bran t reli eved Farnum of second on lap six whi le Scotty Bro wn th en edge d a head of Farn um a t th e li ne for th ird. For th e record it was Castro by a half straightaway over Brant and Browrr. Faria close d out hi s best week th us far in the 1987 seaso n by winning h is third Scra tch main event in fo ur n ights. Steve Lucero was coming from the pole in the main wit h Faria ou t of two, Bobby Schwartz o u t of ga te three and "S howtime" Bobby Ott on th e ou tside. Sch wartz held a slight adva ntage over Faria a nd Lucero 'as th ey en tered turn one , Far ia got the dri ve on the ins ide as they cam e off turn two and th at rocketed him into the lead. L ucero tried to foll ow Faria th rough a nd he got into a side-by-side war wi th Schwar tz. Schwa rtz, using the outs ide , took second for keeps as they came off turn . two on lap two , bu t his chances of ca tching Faria on th e Shoei/Bill's Pipes/Tsubak i/Codv/Oilzall J aw a were pretty slim as Faria had built up a good-sized lead . Ott came up to challenge Lucero for the third sp o t on lap th ree a nd th at was th e o nly race left. Far ia was cr uis ing to hi s 14th lifetime tri ump h at Speedway U SA. Sch wa rtz too k sec ond six len gths back. T hird spot wen t to Wa lt Farnum manages to stay ahead of a backed-in Billy Hamill du ring Scratch main action in Victorville. M ike Faria won the race .
