PI us they stuck me on the back of the grid since I'd switched bikes. I outbraked everyone except Atwell going into tum one and stayed right on him. I slipped by him on the exit from the carousel in lap two and expected him to pass me. He had motor on me, but I think he was spinning more than I was which was to my advantage." Szarck held onto his lead and finished the race four seconds ahead of Atwell. Some of the closest racing of ·the day took place in the smaller classes as old battles were renewed for RZ350 riders. In the D Superbike event, John Lowman got the holeshot on his Yamaha RZ and stayed in front. "I ran my own race," he said. "Everybody was sliding but my slicks were sliding predictably and I felt comfortable with it." The excitement was in second place. Cliff Bigoney was an early contender, but missed a gear exiting tum one and David Murray and Bootie Ballard slipped by, finishing in that order. The next event, Formula Two, saw a three-way battle between John Lowman, Mark Long and Cliff Bigoney, all Yamaha mounted. Lowman and Long traded the lead several times as Bigoney dropped slightly of( the pace. Entering the final tum of the last lap Long drafted Lowman and the pair powered down the straight in a drag race to the flag. They crossed the line side-by-side with neither rider knowing who had won. Long was credited with the win on his Link Cycle Yamaha. Results CLBMN EX: 1. Larry Burkholder (Vam); 2. Daniel piloted his big-bore mount toa 4.291 score, while Webb and Kurt Butler tied at 5.291 points apiece. Webb wound up taking the Vet 250cc AA class win with Butler capturing the 250cc AA class victory. The CRCIDis trict 38-combined event drew almost 500 riders to the two-loop enduro, and after riding in the National enduro in Northern California the day before, Daniel post entered the enduro and ended up with a late, 131 number. But that didn't seem to effect Daniel in any way, despite dusty conditions. The only hassle Daniel had throughout the enduro was at check eight in which he burned. But the check was later thrown out when it was discovered that wind may have blown the SAN BERNARDINO, CA, APR. 15 When Robert Pfetzing is making the starts at a speedway race he is almost unbeatable. At John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway, he was making the starts and they powered him all the way to the win in the Cycle Rider, Inc. Scratch main event. After winning his heat race, Pfeuing was placed in a heavy duty semi that also featured "Show time" Bobby Ott, Mike Faria and the defending National Champion Bobby Schwartz. Schwartz had reeled of( five wins in the first five weekly events in southern California and he would be tough to beat, but Pfetzing and Faria held him back and earned . positions in the main. Pfetzing, aboard the One Grandi Valvoline/KNAC/O'Neal USA/ Lifes a Beach/Surf Gear Weslake, carne off the pole in the main and got another launch on the start. l;be battle would be for second. John Sandona, riding his seldom used GM, and Faria had a good fight for the second place spot. Sandona was riding the low side of the track while Faria tried to make the outside hook up. That battIe lasted until lap three when Sandona opened up a small margin. Pfetzing had it in the bag and he collected his first win of 1987 by about six lengths over Sandona, Faria and Steve Lucero. The Handicap main turned out to be a bam burner and the rider who won only led the last three feeL Jeff Johnson, Billy Hamill and Jimmie O'Dell all carne off the 2o-yard line at the start of the eight-lap grind. Johnson was the Leader as the tapes flew up over O'Dell and Hamill. Hamill got by O'Dell at the end of lap one for the second spot and then held on as O'Dell tried to come back past one circuit later. Louis Kossuth shot by O'Dell at the end of the second lap for third while Shawn McConnell and O'Dell had worked their way through the pack. At the front of the pack, Hamill was attacking Johnson with everything he had. First he tried to get past on the outside and when that didn't work he swung low. But Johnson again held him back to cling to the point position. While Hamill was pressuring Johnson he also had to fend of( the determined bids of Kossuth. It looked as though the win was goin~ to be taken by Johnson, but commg of( the final turn young Hamill (JBeJ 'Repair/Sunrise Oil Be Lube/FOM Racing/Monrovia Diesel/Scott Go~-
