Campbell, CA 95098 M-Star-mounted Joel Jenkins topped a field of over 90 riders at Sunday's Competition Riders of America-sanctioned hare scramble at Mathias Raceway. Jenkins led Honda CR500 rider Gary DeBock for the whole race and wound up taking a narrow victory over the Open class rider. Joe Powers maintained a close third aboard his Kawasaki KX250. In one of the closest races of the day Senior I class riders John Gallagher and Mark Engle took turns holding the class lead until the last ~O minutes of the race, when Gallagher managed to gain an advantage. Husky-mounted Gallagher took the win with Engle and Marry Heben filling out the top three. The class that had the largest turn out of the day was the Open division. Doug ~ (Hue). laPorte smokes Idaho .100 Hare Scramble By Jodane Christofferien CALDWELL, In, AJ'R. 12 Former 250cc World Motocross Champion Danny LaPorte claimed the overall victory in the Idaho 100 Daniel Huskey Benefit Hare Scramble. LaPort~pped a field of 49 riders in a race that raised $700 for the Daniel Huskey Medical Benefit Fun. Huskey suffered a back injury in a desert race earlier this year. The race was put together by Team Whiners and Sagebuster Motorcycle Clubs. Curtis Dice grabbed the early lead in the lOO-miIe contest, but lost the top spot on the second lap to Reed Bright. Shortly after taking the lead Bright suffered a Oat tire and lost time when he stopped it. - Dice took over the lead when Bright pitted, but LaPorte caught and passed Dice in the last two miles of the third lap and went on to win the ra<;e. NCo APR. 12 Richie Horton won the Pee Wee class title at the nevil's Ridge MX, then returned to finish runner-up in the Junior Mini division behind Patrick Greer. Jim Neese edged Stacey Barnett for the Senior Mini class championship while Robbie Taylor dominated the A class action. In Pee Wee class racing it was Horton and Chuck Shirley all the way in both motos with Danny Rich topping Robbie Horton for third. Chuck Shirley challenged Greer for the lead at the start of the first Junior Mini mota, but Greer surged ahead and Shirley dropped out. Richie Horton jumped into second and stayed there with Danny Rich heading Spencer Liggon at the flag for third. Greer made it a repeat performance in the second mota over Horton and Rich. Stacey Barnett and Rusty Coleman set the pace for the first Senior Mini mota with a group of riders in tow. Jim Neese was the first to make a move as he displaced Coleman for second and set his sights on BarnelL Tracey Barnett dropped Coleman to fourth as Neese motored past Stacey Barnett for the lead. Once out from, Neese stretched his lead and the top four places were set. Neese took the win over Stacey and Tracey Barnett with Coleman keeping foUrth over Ronnie Yarbro. Neese and Stacey Barnett fowid themselves in a duel for the lead once again in mota two while Chad Leigh and Troy Logue fought for third. At the checkered flag it was Neese holding a comfortable 15'-second margin over Stacey Barnett with Coleman a well earned third over Tracey Barnett and Leigh. Wayne Guin was the winner in the first 125cc Schoolboy mota but couldn't catch Jim Neese and Shane Kennedy in mota two. Guin's l-~ mota score wrapped up the overall ahead of Kennedy's 2-2 and Neese's 4-1 finish. After two hard fought mOlOS, Scott Riggs won the crown in the 125cc C class while Bryan Kendrick settled for a close second. Kendrick won the first mota by a bike length with Riggs returning the favor in mota two. Billy Reel, Lee Coomes and Wayne Guin rounded out the top five overall. Shane Kennedy ran a stroBg fiHt in the 250cc C class, taking the win over Brad Mills and Ridlard Lewis. Mota two and the overall went to Mills but the battle for second went to the wire. Lewis and Kennedy diced on the final lap with Lewis hoIdiRg second by inches over Kennedy. Kevin Walker added to his growing string of victories with a I-I knockout in the 125cc B class over William Mutimer and Bobby Stovall. Stovall passed Bobby Houser for the win in both 250cc B class mocos while Brad Proctor shadowed the leaders for third over Alan Lavore. The Open B class was a Honda affair as Tim Huffman, Bill Finch and David Sawyer powered around the well-prepped course in a battle for the lead. Finch passed his arch rival and riding buddy Huffman for the first mota win while Sawyer was third. Huffman had his hands full in moto two as Finch and Sawyer stayed on Huffman's rear fender until Finch crashed and Huffman cruised to the win. Finch caught Sawyer for second with James Gain and Ricky Gardner making the lap five.
