A steady rain fell throughout the day and turned the' all grass track into a swamp by race time. The race was the first at the new track and promoter Bill Rhodes said it would be a one shot deal as city fathers had decided not to allow him to continue holding events. Rhodes added he was planning on opening another track between Ozark and Dothan, Alabama. Honda/Kawasaki of Miltonsponsored Russell Grater took the holeshot in the first Pro class moto and opened up a lead, but near the halfway point Mike Williams closed in and began to pressure Grater. After chasing Grater for two laps and coming up short Williams dropped back and T.] Timmons moved into second. Timmons drew even with the leader, bu t Grater held the inside line and didn't back off. In the next turn the two collided, Timmons went down and Grater took the win with Williams moving back into second. With Timmons electing not to ride the muddy second moto, Grater and Cycle Center of Tallahassee-backed Williams went head-to-head for the top money. Williams nailed down the holeshot and led until the last lap when he went wide in a turn. Grater used a tight" inside groove to take the lead. Williams charged back and made a last ditch effort to retake the lead over the double jump. He came up short, clipped the second jump, and went down, allowing Grater to take the win. Williams remounted, uninjured, to finish second. Kawasaki/Suzuki of Ft. Waltonsponsored Scott Grater battled all day with Beasley Honda of Ozark's Mark Vieth for the overall victory in the 250cc Novice class. After winning the first moto, Grater found himself in trouble in the second round. While trailing Vieth he was forced. to throw his mud-caked goggles away. Grater was able to find a clear line inside Vieth with two laps to go. Vieth couldn't pass back and had to settle for second overall. Results PRO: 1. Russell Grater (Kaw); 2. Mike Williams (Kaw): 3. Engstrom motors to Moto Pro MX win By Rolfe Otterness ELKO, MN, APR. 5 Robbie Engstrom proved to be the quickest rider in the 125cc Expert class at the Moto Pro Racing, Inc.sponsored MX. Engstrom ran a strong second in the first mot<> at EIl<..o and took the win in the next round. Bryan Hunt took the lead away from Daemyn Olsen early in the first moto and held on for the win. Engstrom moved up strongly near the end of the race, dropping Olsen to third and nearly catching Hunt. Troy Dollansky ed the pack through the first turn in the second moto, but Engstrom motored by before the end of the first lap. Dollansky held on to take second at the checkered flag with Rick Pfeilsticker holding down third. This was the first race of the year for the Moto Pro Racing gang and they offered some track improvements for the new year. Over 400 riders entered and that was a track record. The new 25 and Over class was well received. Mike Graif led the way in the first moto to take the win with Tim Bartylla closing. Graif took an early lead in the second moto and although Donovan yberg pressured him he held on to take the win. Scott Cripps took two thirds for second overall. Results YTH: 1. Jimmy Burns; 2.
