AMA District 7 number one rider Craig Fish made the first attempt at the 67-foot climb and scored a three, to crest me opening part of the section. Sattelmeier made note of this, and hit the base of the hill in fourth gear, giving him enough momentum to make the crest, with only a single dab. The next three sections al I featured lesser climbs, on the tractionless wet slate. Sattelmeier again attacked the sections with momentum, and by the time Fish had made the adjustment and settled down to his normal surgical smoothness on se~tion f~ve, he found himself a full mne poInts down. Fish fought back LO close the deficit to only three marks by halfway through the third loop, but Sattel meier rallied through the remainder of the event, including a brilliant clean on section four, the only one of the day. Section four was by far tbe most difficult of the event. It was here that disaster struck first year A rider Tony DeJulius, who bro~e his .from.brake backing plate, leaVIng hIm Wtth no front brake. This mishap gave veteran A rider Jim Palmer some welcomed breathing room, as DeJulius had been exerting considerable pressure up to mat poi~l.. DeJulius toughed out the remaInmg three loops and despite some spe<;tacular fives on the steep downhIlls, he finished 29 points down from A class winner Palmer at day's end. Results AA: 1. Sattelmeier tops Slate Mountain Trial By A. S. Hanson WHITEFORD, MD, APR. 5 The Gunpowder Valley M.C. held its inaugural Slate Mountain Trial Sunday and the event proved to be a success despite a baptism by an early spring sleet and snow storm. Brock Sat~elmeier proved to be the most masterful slate rider of the day, dropping 39 points in 32 sections and besting his closest competitor by II points. Section one was changed the morning of the run to an A classani y section due to the length of the climb and the wet soil conditions. By Merle Acord MORRISON, IL, APR. 12 Can-Am rider Kelly Getz, AMA District ITs number one hare scrambles rider, won the first race of a sixrace series sponsored by Bike Barn and Spectra Oil Products in the newly formed Illinois Hare Scramble Association. Geu won by two and a half minutes over Hickman Racing-sponsored KTM rider Willis VanZee. Geu led the 150 riders off the line from the dead-.engine start and aimed his 250cc Can-Am for the comer marker, a late-model Ford Bronco, a hundred yards away in the open, sandy field. Geu won the drag race and ducked into the first woods section 10 yards in front of VanZee. "I just couldn't get away from him (VanZee)," said Geu. "He's got that 350 KTM and when we'd get in those long, open fields he would close up. He was right there for the first hour and then he dropped back. It was a great course. Some tight woods, some open fields, and we had a little patch of marsh, but there were good lines. That deep sand motocross by the scoring barrels was a riol. It got better as the race went pn, but during the first hour guys were falling all over the place." VanZee, who warred in the motocross world before turning to O'oss country riding, thought the sandy motocross section was great. "I just couldn't reel Getz in," said VanZee, ''I'd gain a little ground during the motocross section, but that was about the only time I even saw him." Third place in the Heavyweights (25Occ and up) was another KTM rider and motocrosser, Jeff Steven-
