At the end of the second hour only three teams remained on the lead lap with Dutchman leading the way followed by Kayo and Human Race each-with 63 laps. Kayo started a hard charge in the third hour, passing Dutchman and opening up a one-lap lead over the now-in-second Human Race Team. Dutchman held third with Fubar Racing (GSXRIIOO) and Team Racerback (Ninja 750) rounding out the top five at the halfway point in the race. Back in ~e pack some excellent class battles were going on. Only one' lap separated PDQ Racing's Yamaha FZ600 and the Team St. Louis Honda CBX600 Hurricane at the hallway point in the Mediumweight Production class. In the Lightweight class, Team FBI had their Kawasaki EXSOO in the lead, but just 15 seconds behind was last year's Lightweight champs Royale ~acing on a Yamaha RZ350. Rentzell and Ewerth extended Kayo Racing's lead even further in the fourth hour, completing 127 laps to 125 for Dutchman and Human Race. That lead quickly evaporated in the fifth hour when a steady drizzle (which lasted about a half-hour) caused Kayo to change from Yokohama slicks to the production race Yokohamas. After the change Ewerth was back on and gaining quickly on Dutchman who were still on slicks. With one hour to go Dutchman's lead had dwindled to 15 seconds over Kayo. Kayo's Racing's captain Forbes Duguid decided to get Rentzell back on the bike to make the charge to the finish. And charge he did, Rentzell's lap times in the last hour were 10 seconds a lap faster than Dave Schlosser on Dutchman's Suzuki. Kayo Racing went on to take the win by 40 seconds at the checkered £lag. Yokohama's David Graham was happy after the race. "It came down to who was faster, Kevin or Schl.osser and Kevin was really £lying out there today," said Graham. Rentzell was turning oneminute, 46-second lap times in the last hour; the quickest times of the day. ''I'm very impressed with the Yamaha (FZRlooO), I was able to pull the GSXRllOOs on thestraig~t away," said Rentzel!. "I want to thank Yokohama and Norwalk Honda/Yamaha, we are going to run the rest of the WERA series and I think we have a good chance to win the championship." The Human Race Team took third, first in Heavyweight Production on their FZR750. It was Yamaha's day as PDQ Racing held off Team St. Louis' for the Mediumwei~ht Production win; PDQ was on a NIgel Janes-tuned Yamaha FZ600. In Lightweight, Moto-Liberty overcame a second-hour crash to win on a Japanese model Yamaha FZR400 brought over by enthusiast Sam Yamasita. Rentzell continued his domination of Saturday to Sunday as he won five sprint races before crashing while going for win number six. The C Production was shaping up to be one of the most competitive all year. Honda· CBX600 Hurricanes were everywhere along with several Yamaha FZ600s and a few Kawasakis loaded with talent. Former and defending WERA National Champions Doug Polen, Rentzell, Boonie Knott, Ed Key, Kurt Hall, Scott Zampach, Ron Ewerth and Jim Knipp were all racing. In the qualifying heat race, Rentzell ran away from the field, but Polen had started way back in the heat and was now going to be on row three for the final. As the green £lag dropped, Rentzell had enough confidence in his Yokohamas to go flat out from the stan. His strategy paid off as he opened up a gap on Hall and Russell. On the fourth lap Hall made an all out charge to pass Rentzell, but the Tennessean held off the challenge. Rentzell's Hurricane was caught on radar at an incredible 145 mph compared to 143 for most of the other Hurricanes. Rentzell was turning consistent one-minute, 45.2second lap times, while Polen, once clear of traffic, turned one-minute, 44.5-second laps. But it was too late for Polen to catch the lead trio. At the checkered it was Rentzell by two, seconds over Hall, followed by Russell and then Polen. Andy Fenwick, Zampach, Terry Hampton, Key, Dave Leppelmeier and Lance Jones rounded out the top 10 in one of the most competitive WERA races in years. Honda Hurricanes completely dominated taking the first 27 places. Rentzell won four other races this day before crashing while leading the C Superbike race which was won by Andy Fenwick. Other multiple sprint winners included 1967 National Junior road race champ Ron Widman and local racer Gary Jeffries. Jeffries had severa] battles with Robert Reed, and in the C Production Novice race it came down to the last lap as Jeffries' 600 Hurricane out motored Reed's Ninja 600 to the line. • Results ENDUR: 1.
