Gray scores at Sears Point By Karenlynne Bradley SONOMA, CA, MAR. 29 The opening day of the season for the AFM Nonh clearly belonged to one rider, SCOlt Gray. Gray, who is recovering from an injury received at Daytona three weeks ago, came out to prove that he can still be compeutive - and prove it he did. The first race of the day had Gray on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSXRllOO for the Open Stock Production race. Halfway through the first lap, Gray had taken over first place. Although he was pursued by Jeff Hagan, Chris Steward, Rick Liukkonen: and lain Pero, Gray maintained an impressive lead over the remainder of the pack, easily turning I :48s on his stock Suzuki. Gray easily took the checkered flag, followed by Hagan in second and Steward in third. Pero took fourth and Liukkonen was fifth. Gray came out again for the 750<:c Stock Production class, another class dominated by Suzuki GSXRs. R.ichard Moore led off the line, followed by Allen Salterlee and Gray. By the time these three reached the boltom of the carousel at turn six, Gray had taken over the lead. The ballle for second place centered around Pero and Moore, with Pero finally taking second during the fifth lap. The ballie for fourth was well contended between James Damay and Steve Crevier. After eight laps, Gray took his second checkered flag of the day, followed by Pero in second, Moore in third, Crevier in fourth and Domay in fifth. In the 600cc Stock Production class, G{ay was mounted on a new Honda Hurricane. Jim Jepsen led the first lap on his Yamaha FZ, followed by 'Peter Wensloff, Moore, and Gray. Durin~ the second lap, Gray moved up, fmally taking over the lead in turn 10. From then on, it was just another game of "follow the leader" - he was, after all, on a Honda. Moore was firmly occupying second place, and Jepsen was in third. Wensloff moved into third place during lap four, but dropped back to fifth during the sixth lap, after allowing Mike Johnson and Steward to slip ·by. Jepsen had a disappointing race, dropping from first back to seventh by the end of the race. Gray was' all smiles as he walked off with his third first-place trophy of the day. Moorewas second, Steward third, Johnson fourth, and Wensloff fifth. Results F-4: 1. R. Hollister (Hon~ OPEN GP: 1. B. Brinkmln (Suz); 2. J. Banister (Suz); 3. P. KrISS (Suz). F-2: 1. W. Schmulbach tops PaducahST By Karen Lewis PADUCAH, KY, MAR. 28 lllinois rider Bart Schmulbach took top honors in both the 125 and 250<:c classes, Sunday, during the Paducah short track. Schmulbach grabbed the holeshot in the I25cc main with Eddie Reagor in hot pursuit. Robbie Grief closed in on the leaders at the halfway mark and made it a three rider affair. Reagor had the better line through turns one and two and took the lead on the last lap. Schmulbach dove low in the last corner and it paid off, as he nipped Reagor by a wheel. Grief finished a safe third. Schmulbach came back from another last lap win in the 250<:c heat, to best the final over Chris Allen and Buddy Akers and complete his sweep. Andy Richardson led the Open main start ahead of Gary Wiell and David Flowers.
