Cook dominates
TampaRR
By Jack Roe
TAMPA, FL, MAR. 22
A large crowd turned out to see the
Florida Gran Prix Rider's Association road race at Tampa Fairgrounds
and wi th over 50 en ti-ies in the
Endurance race, it was decided to run
two Endurance races with Classes 1,
2, and 3 going off first and then, the
Class 4 and 5 Endurance race.
In the Class 1, 2 and 3 race there
were 31 entries. With an extremely
tight first tum, the first few laps
could only be described as eventful
as several inexperienced and a couple
experienced riders took to the grass
or other areas generally not regarded
as the track. The battle between Glen
Perry and Dave Robichaux again
turned into the race of the day. Perry
got the jump at the start, and while
Robichaus could close the gap in
certain sections, he was unable to
pass. Perry and Robichaux finished
first and second and lapped the rest
of the field.
.
The Class 4 and 5 Endurance race
had 21 entries and its start came o££
much smoother than the previous
race. Jerry Cook aboard his Suzuki
of Tampa-sponsored
Suzuki
GSXRllOO thoroughly dominated
the race from start to finish. Cook's
smooth style made his ride look
effortless as he took first overall and
first in Clas.s 5. Jimmy Nicks,
another Suzuki of Tampa-sponsored
rider, aboard a Suzuki AGSXR750
was the only rider to finish on the
same lap as Cook, good for a second
overall and first in Class 4.
In the Sprint races, the GP 3 event
provided the thrills expected between
Perry and Robichaux. Again, Perry
was first o££ the line, with Robichaux
as close 'lis ever but again unable to
pass. Revenge was Robichaux's as
Perry lost the front end on the last
lap, with a well earned win going
to Robichaux. .
.
The GP 4 race again saw Cook:s
superiority aver the rest of the field
as he led from start to finish. John
Curwick, on a Suzuki GSXR750, and
Bruce Osborn, aboard another
Suzuki
of Tampa-sponsored
GSXR750 had a good dice for second.
Curwick got the jump at the start
and while Osborn could close the
gap, he was unable to get around
John. As held true throughout the
day, a good start was critical due to
the di££icult passing conditions of
the ti~ht track. Osborn had to settle
for third behind Curwick.
