MIA IANCTIO"IO ~san iirJ6ecol -~- Joey Hopkins pilotttd his Husqvarna to the overall win at the Sumter HS. wins leaving the ballle behind [or second. Many CRRC veterans were trying for the Suzuki cash for the first time, but it was visiting Georgian Mike Harth who took home econds in both classes. In the hotly contested 750cc class, rookie Expert Craig Gleason took a well deserved third on his GSXR, followed by Wesley Winchester· on a VFR and his former ovice rival Steve Plentl on a week old FZR750. Ottis Lance and Sander Avant picked the re t of the top seven on Suzukis after Jamie James suffered a next to last lap crash while running fourth. James came back to take third in the Open clas behind Polen and Harth, and was followed by Mall Maschmann, PlentI, and Lance. The CRRC-only Battle of the Twins cia s picked up steam with 12 entries, and it promised to be a showdown between Vernon Davis on his Yamaha powered handmade "Lurch" and Kevin Stasny on his Daytona fresh Ducati F-l. Unfortunately, Davis only made it a 100 feet off the starting line before his bike failed, and Stasny also pulled in after the first lap with mechanical diHiculties. This left Andra Vandenberg to a runaway victory on a Moto Guzzi LeMans, [ollowed by the Ducati FIs o[ James Learmonth and Matthew Storm. In one of the more unusual incidents of the day, a race was settled by a coin toss. Robert Taylor thundered of[ the line in the Formula I class on his Suzuki GSXRlloo and appeared to have a comfortable cushion. Coming from the back of the pack, however, was a hardcharging Britt Turkington riding the GSXR750 Superbike that took him to 16th in the Daytona 200. He soon was in striking distance of Taylor and was within two bike lengths by the white £lag lap. The starter gaffed on the finish, not pulling the checkered £lag unti I the pair thundered across the line with Turkington holding a bike length advantage. The pair was unsure the race was over 0 they continued their furious pace. When they came across the next time Taylor crossed the line by a wheel ahead of Turkington. The race director David Donaho explained the starter's error to the pair immediately and head tech inspector Greg Bauer suggested a coin toss to settle the mistake. Taylor won the flip and both parties left happy in a fine example of the good sportsmanship evident in the CRRC. Other standouts for the day were Setl1 Avant who took his Honda thumper to victory in Clubman and Formula 2 Expert, Eric Fait, who • BRAce Gear TRAILERS 522,000 RACEWEAR purse ~~ Sun., May 24th, Memorial Day Weekend 1-79 to Exit-1 Mt. ...
