Bobby Carsten and Team
Honda Support rider Teddy
Trey split wins at the World
Spons/USHRA
ational
Arenacross Championships at the
famous Madison Square Gardens in
downtown Manhattan. Carsten took
his Saturday opener win with a fine
display of stadium riding as he
overcame a mid-pack start to card the
victory over Suzuki-mounted Dave
Diehl and New York's own Mike
DePalma. On Sunday, Trey moved
into the early Four-Wheel lead ahead
of Barry McCarty and Frank Coryell.
The Gardens' race, the second World
Sports Arenacross held in the Big
Apple, attracted more than 31,000
fans, including the Motoworld cameras and two of Europe's top indoor
promoters, on hand lO measure the
arena talent.
Three qualifying heats and a pair
of consolation races were needed lO
reduce the field down to the final 10.
Trey opened the preliminaries with
a beat one win over McCarty. Carsten
and Sean Cully went one-two in the
second heat while Coryell and Ken
Porada ruled race three. Diehl and
DePalma were consi qualifiers along
with Darren Naccarato aDd Ernest
LeClerc.
When the gate dropped for the
main event, McCarty pushed his way
through the tum one mayhem to
conttol the leaderboard ahead of
Trey, Porada, Diehl and Carsten. But
on lap two, McCarty cased his
machine on the back end of a double
just in front of Trey, who had already
committeed aDd was on his way
down. Trey took a seat on McCarty's
stalled backside and both went down
hard. With the fronttunners on the
infield, Carsten seized the chance to
malc.e up some time and shot by
Porada for the top spot. From that
point on Carsten would control the
race, while Diehl stayed on his flank.
The second place Suzuki was having
a time of it in ttaffic after having
been rear-ended early by another
pilot and having his rear brake
assembly cleaned off. With no back
binders, Diehl still managed to notch
second place behind Carsten with
DePalma, LeClerc, and Porada
rounding out the lOp five.
Coryell was considered a pre-race
favorite going inlO the opener aft~
performing some radical moves over
the numerous Garden doubles, but
in the final, his hang time was offset
by a poor start and trouble in traffic.
Coryell opened Sunday's matinee
with an impressive take-no-prisoners
heat race win that saw Coryell spend
most of his time 10 rows high. A
recovered McCarty made the grade
with a do-or-die consi win after being
outtun in his heat race by accaralO
and Diehl.
Trey also made the Sunday cut and
when the card went sideways for the
final he was all alone out front in
turn one, followed by DePalma,
McCarty, Diehl and Coryell. Trey
quickly made his pursuit take notice
by matching Coryell's double jump
feats, and soon he had opened a
comfortable margin over new number
two McCarty. DePalma dropped
back on lap six after finding trouble
in the back section, and Coryell
quickly situated himself on McCarty's roost and hounded the runnerup
to the flag. But when the checkers
came out it was still Trey out front
with McCarty ranking second. After
Coryell came Diehl and Cully.

TRAVELERS REST, SC, MAR. 21
The first day of spring brought
out about a hundred motorcycle racers to Stepp Mill's
motocross. Everyone seems to
. like the re-routed MX ttack, especially Robbie Taylor who claimed
two Pro class viclOries.
Pro class action found Taylor
taking bOlh the 125 and 250cc classes,
but not without a fight. Mike Crawford got the jump on Taylor and led
for about half of the 250cc main, but
once Taylor figured out where the
best place was to pass, there was no
catching him.
A slew of Novice riders emered, 'So
the class was divided into 125s and
25Occ/Open. In I25cc Novice action,
Alan Hall won both races handily

Merle Mader, riding a wellprepped Honda 250, won both
the 250cc class race and a
special "Dash-for-Cash" at the
Summit Valley Hare Scramble.
A good turnout of Open and 250cc
riders prompted the promoters lo
offer a special "Dash-for-Cash"
competition, which Mader won by
a narrow margin over runnerup Don
Bigler, a Senior rider from Carnegie,
Pennsylvania, ~ho was riding a
200cc machine.
Ted Miller and Scon Braden
waged a see-saw baule for 25 laps
in the Open class. They swapped the
lead back and forth before Miller
finally took the lead for good on lap
22.
Mader claimed the 250cc class win
over Tim Coen and George Case,
while Bigley won the Senior 200cc
class over Dan Bigley and Tom
Davis.
In the 125cc class, Brian Croniser
took a tough win over Brian Vosi
and Ken "what-a-great-name-for-aracer" Speedy.
