Jaworski BRASELTON, GA, MAR. 28-29 It was another strong weekend for Chattanooga, Tennessee's Kevin Rentzell at Road Atlanta as he rode away with seven victories and a new found love, an out-of-the-box Honda CBRlOOOF Hurricane. "We received this machine, thanks to Sloan Cycle, on Friday and the only modifications made was to the exhaust," said Rentzell. "I can't wait till we change over to the competition gearing. I think I'm in love." The series of wins began on Saturday with the lOO-mile Endurance race taken by Rentzell on the Hurricane. Teammate Jeff Atwell finished second on a 750cc Suzuki and Hilton Von Sladen took third on a Suzuki 1100. Doug Polen on a Suzuki GSXRllOO was holding onto a very strong second place in the early part of the race, only to succumb to mechanical problems. In the GTU class, David Campbell finished first with Steve McClintock second and Jim Still third. The Supersport races were moved up on the clock, replacing heat races due to late practice rounds caused by early monung fog. The Middleweight Novice race saw Todd Trumble shoot by Richard Resta into second on the fourth lap and begin to pressure leader David Campbell. With four laps to go, Trumble made his move and got by Campbell to lake the lead and the win. Third went to Resta, who was follow~ home by Marvin Moss and Keith Miller. In the Middleweight Expert class, Rentzell took the lead on the first lap with his Kayo Racing/Cycle Performance Honda 600 Hurricane, followed by Ron Ewenh on the Cycle Nuts and Bolts Hurricane and Greg Tysor on his Continental/Shoeisponsored Hurricane. By the third lap things began to happen as Tysor passed both Ewerth and Rentzell. As the front pack approached the back portion of the course, Rentzell pulled lOtO the lead only to soon find himself back in second with Tysor again leading the charge. For the next six laps it was Tysor and Rentzell in a tight race with the lead changing several times. On the final lap they were still on each other's tail, with Tysor leading down the back straight; but Rentzell slipped by again to take the lead and the win. "On almost every lap Rentzell would get me on the back straight and I'd get him at the bridge," said Tysor. "On the last lap that just didn't happen and Kevin took it." Taking third was Ron Ewenh followed by Cam Roos and Mike McPoyle. Polen ran away from the rest of the Heavyweight Combined field on his Texas Hyper£ormance/Dunlop Suzuki GSXR750. On the ninth lap Polen had lapped everyone except second place rider Tom Kipp and was 25 seconds away from lapping him when the checkered flag waved. "We really weren't interested in any times," said Polen. "We were out there only to do a test on a new Dunlop front tire." Taking third was Dennis Johnson, proceeded by Novice riders David Campbell and Terry Torres. With Saturday's competition completed, the AMAlCCS Sprints took over on Sunday with 10 events on lap. The first of the series was the Lightweight Superbike Combined, with 19 Novice entries and only four Expert riders in the field. Taking the leaii after the green was Novice rider Steve McClintock, riding a 500cc Honda Interceptor, with Ben Beasley on his Honda 500 in second and Harry Norman third on a Yamaha Rn50. On the fourth lap McClintock, Beasley and Norman were still' deadlocked with a good battle taking place between Novice riders Pete Klee, Scott Woolard and Mike Reed for fourth, fifth and sixth. Klee, who began .the race in the sixth spot, soon found himself behind fourth-placed Woolard. With , the field coming around after six laps Beasley was gaining on the leader McClintock with Norman still in third and Klee now in the fourth position. . On the. ninth lap Beasley was hot on the heels of McClintock coming out of tum six and McClintock must have felt his presence as he bobbled going into seven, allowing Beasley to pass on the inside. McClintock took second followed by Norman, Klee, Woolard and Reed. The next event was Formula One which was Rentzell's first win of the day on his Kayo &acing Hurricane. Mark Chin took second on a Yamaha FZR75O, followed by Deane Swims on a Kayo Racing GSXR750, Tommy Sloan on his Sloan Honda! Yamaha 750 and Jeff Atwell fifth on another Kayo Racing Suzuki 750. The combined Supertwins Expert and Novice race saw an early duel between Hilton Von Staden on a Ducati 750 and James Adamo on a Ducati 1000. The first lap had Von Sladen in the lead, James Stewart in second, Pete Strunk in third and Adamo closing in on fourth. Adamo, who was picking his way skillfully through the pack, was in second place by the second lap and catching Von Staden. On the fifth lap Adamo took the lead when Von Staden failed to appear. He was followed by Strunk. Stewart and Shockley. By the eighth lap Adamo had pulled away to a 52second lead over Strunk. Third was James Stewart, followed by Robert Steinbugler and John White. Formula Two Expert was another successful venture for the Kayo Racing Group as Rentzell took another win. with Swims fourth and their stable-mate Atwell in fifth. Tommy Sloan fittished second with Bryan Schwing third. Heavyweight Superbike Novice was a thriller between Bob Rentzell (Kevin's brother) on the Cycle Petformance Yamaha FZ600 and Steve Seaborn on his Kawasaki 600.
