the leader in the 125 division, and Open Expert Clint StephaD rounded out the top ten. The lIlI-mile third section was the shortest but most difficult stage of the-race. The tiring riders faced miles of tight, technical terrain, choppy cross-grain, and' a dreaded section known as "the jungle." "If I'd known about the jungle I would've cut about six inches off my handlebars before the race," said Senior class ace Richard Jackson. "They must've gone into the bushes with a chainsaw and cut out a sixinch-wide trail and they ran us through that. I don't have any knuckles left and my handguards are just shredded. Next time.I'm going shopping for some tiny enduro bars." Krause wasted no time in the final dash to the checkered flag. The CR500 pilot was giving it everything he had in a last ditch effort to hang onto the lead, pushing hard despite the difficult terrain of the later stages. Back in second, Charlie Morris had his RM250 wrung out, trying to make up time on Krause, but the big push was coming from further back m the pack. Despite going into the last section eight minutes behind the leader, Smith refused to quit. He muscled through the tight terrain and was gaining ground fast as the race drew to a close, Smith's last-minute charge rocketed him into third overall, but the course ran out before he got within striking distance of Morris or Krause. Krause took the checkers a comfortable four and a hall minutes ahead of Morris, with Smith claiming third overall two minutes behind Morris. Krause attributed his win to fol- lowing his mother's advice. "Mom told me before the race that all I had to do was get out in front and stay there. I was just following orders," Krause joked. "Irode as hard as I could the 'whole way - never let up for a minute, and the bike never missed a beat. Morris said he spent the entire race playing catch up. "I was totally last off the line," he said, "My bike just wouldn't start and after that I had to charge really hard the whole way." . "These guys arejust lucky -lucky I had problems," said a laughing Smith. "I was riding so good today. I couldn't do anything wrong. It was one of those days when everything just comes together perfectly and I had to get a flat tire to ruin it." Fourth overall and second in the 250 Division went to Husqvamamounted Scott Morris, who fought his way up through the pack after "a really bad start, as usual." Knapp took fifth overall despite a rear flat and a lenghty stall in the middle of the river in section two, Harden, riding a YZ250, took the win in the Vet division by finishing sixth overall. "I missed my pit at the first gas and lost about five places going back to find it," said Harden. "That put me at the end of a long trail of riders and I couldD't get by for ages because of the dust." Harden was followed in by 250cc pilots Frehner and Anderson. The winner of the 125 Division, Mike Palmer, brought his Honda home in ninth overall. "I rode the nationals last year and broke down in most of them," Palmer said. "It feels great just to finish, let alone win the class. " Stephan took tenth overall on his Open class Honda, with second Vet finisher Paul Bennett hard on his heels, Second in the 125cc class went to Idaho's Jeff Miller, who found the last half of the race a shocking experience. "I must be having some sort of igni tion problem," Miller said. "Something went wrong about hall way 'round and I was getting little electric shocks off the bike all the time. " Third in the 125cc class went to Yamaha pilot Kevin Case of Spring Valley, California in 20th overall. The Steve Pitts/Wayne Carlton duel for points in the Vet class that developed in last year's National series provided some exciting racing at the Groundshakers event. The twO riders battled back and forth for the entire 114 miles, with Utah rider Pitts slipping across the finish line in 14th overall just a few feet ahead of southern California's Carlton. ''I'd crash and he'd pass me, then he'd crash and I'd pass him back. It went on the whole way," said Pitts. "We were so close we couldn't let up for a mlnu.te." The honors in the Senior division went to Husky pilot Richard Jackson (l8th overall), who now has the class lead in the series with two wins. In an unusually close finish for the Seniors, Ron Paproski took second just four minutes behind Jackson. The first Amateur to cross the line (22nd overall) was YZl25 pilot Kelley Pate. Right on Pate's tail was the first 250cc Amateur rider, Gary Hall, of Norwalk, California. Hall was fol- . lowed in by 250 Amateur Terry Stuthman on a Yamaha, with Jim Stevens taking first Open Amateur in 24th overall. • Dan Smith rode hard but managed only third thanks to a flat rear tire.
