In addition to his trophy, Mealer also took home a $1 00 contingency posted by Yamaha of Prattville for wmning overall. The 5.2 mile course included several wide open grass pastures, a maze section in the woods, a sandy uphill grade that ended with a steep 30-foot descent, and a small section of the motocross course. Rain Brior to the race turned some areas 'into mud bogs, but dust was at a minimum. Mealer used the dead engine start to his advantage and led the Senior class off the line. The 125cc, 200cc, 25Occ, and Open classes followed at one minute intervals. Mealer's Husqvarna support teammate David Crain took the point in the Open class wave and set sail towards the front. By the end of the first lap Crain had passed all of the 250s and was running in the middle of the 200cc machines. Honda rider Darryl Heisler also broke away from the 500cc pack and ran with Crain for half of the 12 lap race until engine trouble finished his day. On the ninth lap Crain had closed to within 20 seconds of Mealer when a tire puncture forced him to retire. Mealer led the final three laps for a wire-to-wire victory. With the early 500cc front runners out of action, Beasley Honda of Ozark-sponsored Jeff Brown put his Honda CR500 in the lead and scored the Open class Sunnyside Honda-backed Munson took the holeshot and early lead in the first moto over Scott Steffy, Larson and David Bailey. The race was a battle between the first three riders, with Larson and Steffy starting to put pressure on Munson. It became a two man race, however, when Larson fell and restarte'd -the race in fourth behind Bailey. . Munson and Steffy continued their battle for first until Munson spun out in a sharp turn and handed the lead to Steffy. Munson Fegrouped quickly and two laps before the finish he made an excellent pass to recapture the lead for good. The second 250cc Pro moto also had a close race for first Munson stole the holeshot again with Larson and Steffy in tow. Munson and Larson began to pull away from Steffy and the rest of the field early in the race and the battle for first intensified. Larson challenged Munson a couple of times before making a clean pass towards the end of the moto. Munson kept Larson close, but finished a few bike lengths behind the Nationally-ranked rider. Munson's 1-2 was good enough for the overall win, while Larson recorded a 1-3 for second. ~:~ults OVERALL: 1. Terry Mealer (Husl. OPEN: 1. Jeff Brown (Hon); 2. Ed Culver (Hon); 3.
