Ed Lojak, riding an '87 Husqvarna 250 XC, took first overall honors in the AMA National Hare Scrambles #3 at Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. More than 4,000 spectators watched Lojak and his Husqvarna master the dusty, tight terrain and finish over five minutes ahead of his nearest rival in the three hour race. The Husky rout was completed by Mark Hyde, who took the. Open A class on a Husqvarna 430 automatic. Henry Stankiewicz and Charles Galbraith contributed to _Husky's banner day with firsts in the Senior A and Super Senior classes. Lojak's 1987 250XC carried a·stock micro processor ignition, mated to a new long stroke 249cc liquid cooled two stroke engine with lighter connecting rods for improved engine balance and vibration control. Also new for '87 are lighter, stronger swing arms and hubs, dual piston front isc brakes, updated fork valvlng, improved Ohlins shock design and spring rates, and a more progressive rear linkage setup. Ducati's Jimmy Adamo won the Supertwins Combined class. Renuell and David CampbeJl. As they came imo turn one on the second lap, Renuell had already passed Choate and was challenging Seaborn. On the fourth lap, Renuell passed Seaborn in turn 12, but lost the lead on the inside of turn one. However, Renuell found himself, once again, in the lead with Seaborn in hot pursuit on the back portion of the track. Riding down the front straight and into turn one, Seaborn tried going low, but Renuell out powered him over the rise. Plunging under the bridge, Seaborn passed Renuell while protecting the outside lane. Renuell again slipped under and repassed Seaborn on the inside of turn one. With the ninth lap underway, AJdo Wing, who had been holding onto third, and John Choate in the fourth position surprisingly round themselves in first and second; both had passed Seaborn and RentzeJl. With not much time left, Wing stretched his lead to the £lag as Choate [ell back to fourth and Renuell beat Seaborn for second by a half a wheel. "We did it to ourselves," said Bob Renuell after the loss. "We were passing each other and had a good lead and 1 guess we thought we'd relax a little. The next thing you know we were passed and just ran out of time." Heavyweight Superbike Expert was to be the final race of the day and yet another win for Renuell. At the start, Renuell grabbed the lead with Tommy Sloan in second and Mark Chin in third. Chin had problems on the downhill, grabbed too_much from brake and found himself on the losing end of the Georgia red clay. On the fourth lap, Rentzell's teammate Atwell had moved from fourth into second, followed by Sloan and SherrilL On the seventh lap Renuell turned a 1.32.84 and held a 15.80-second advantage. Atwell finished second with Sloan third, [oilowed by Jim Sherrill and Bryan chwing. "I did what 1 came out to do," said a happy Renuell.
