In the 125-500cc Pro division, Timmy Barnes edged Tim Terry for the first moto holeshot. By the halfway marl<. however, Brian McNeill had dropped Terry to third and was challenging Barnes' lead. McNeill got past but a subsequent spill by McNeill gave the lead and the win to Barnes. Series leader Terry came back to win the final moto and his 3-1 tally earned top honors over Barnes' 1-3. McNeill's pair of second place finishes netted third overall. Greg Casler headed Bobby Houser in the opening laps of both 125cc Amateur motos but series leader Houser had the edge and passed Casler both times to win with a ~ect score. Casler took a spiH late In the second moto and had to settle for a fourth place finish. Brad Proctor's 3-2 tally earned runner-up honors over Casler's 2-4. Houser dominated both molOS of 250cc Amateur action 'while Proctor waged war· with Eric Rogers and jimmy johnson for the second place gold. Rogers nailed down second spot early in moto one while johnson and Proctor locked bars in a moto-Iong debate for third. Proctor made a last lap bid and passed Johnson to finish third. In molO two, Proctor held off Rogers to finish second while Johnson trailed to a fourth place finish. Proctor's 3-2 edged Rogers' 2-3 for second overall. The Open Amateur class witnessed TwO molOS of back-and-forth. action as Tim Huf£man and Lee Bryant took turns at the lead. Hallway through the first molO, Huffman got by Bryant and held on for the win. At the start of moto TwO, Huffman showed the way but soon collided with a lapped rider and surrendered the lead to Bryant. Abel wins at Greenbo MJC By Susan Willian ARGILLITE, KY, MAR. 8 Greenrose Honda-mounted Billy Abel and Deaton Bros. Kawasaki rider Scotty Watkins hounded each other at the Greenbo MX season opener, while Kawasaki Team Green's Steve Childress earned wins in the 125 B and 250cc B classes. The first molO of the 250cc A class . saw Watkins hot 0(( the· line with Abel a close second. By the end of lap two, Abel had closed 10 Watkins' rear fender as they began to race side by side around the natural terrain co~se. Abel ~e out on top by takin$ the outside of a tum, while WatkirIs opted fOJ the mside. Abel then stretched out some distance over WatkirIs but crashed at the end of the wh?Op section allowing Watkins to cruise by. Back underway in second, Abel charged for Watkins. With the last lap underway, the Two raced in unison. Abel made a move to go by, but Watkins kept a leading edge for the win at the checkered with Abel inches away in second. Moto TwO saw Watkins stall his machine at the first tum, while Abel jammed to the froru of the pack. Abel captured the moto win while Watwith Watkins finishmg for second. Watkins hauled of£ the lirIe in molO one of the 125cc A with Abel c1Iasing. The seven lap race saw Watkins with the lead until the final lap when Abel passed him over a jump for the moto win. The start of moto two found Watkiris out in front again with ~bel sef:ond. Watkins, competing in his first race since. a broken arm, held 0(( Abel until lap three, when Abel went by to be the eventual winner with Watkins filing through for second. Results 1_ OPEN II; 1. Dircks shared the winner's circle with 250ccExpert Brian Pryor. Pryor took both 250cc molOS on his Young Cycle Supply/Gear/Scott/Kal-Gardbacked Kawasaki over Eric Kirk and Bryan Hayes. By the start of the first l25cc Expert molO the heavily watered Firebird track had developed serious ruts and holes that took its toll on all the riders:David McDermott was fastest out of the gate, but McDermott feU when his from wheel washed out in the first turn. Dircks took over first closely followed by Chappy Blose, Curtis Culbert and Pryor. McDermott was up and running in fifth. Blose collected the lead on lap three of the nine. lap molO when D~rcks fell. Quickly remounting, Ducks charged back to second place on the next lap and into the lead on lap five. Pryor was the next to crash, but was back up after losing second 10 Blose. On lap seven, Dircks was well in front, while Pryor took an outside line to regain second from Blose. Dircks lOok the checkered flag with a 13·second advantage over Pryor. Blose finished in third well ahead of Bobby Arnold. Blose rocketed out of the gate 10 lead the second moto and held on for three laps as Dircks blasted through the pack after a last place start. Once past Blose, Dircks took 0(( 10 win by a huge margin. Pryor took third from Culbert on lap two and second from Blose on lap four. By lap nine everybody was' showing signs of fatigue but Dircks went on for the win and Pryor was second over a distant Blose. Pryor found the combination for the 250cc Expert holeshot and ran away with it. Eric Kirk grabbed the. inside line and shot by Bryan Hayes for second on lap two, while Blose came up 10 challenge. Hayes lost third to Blose on lap six, but stayed close throughout the molO. Hayes charged up alongside Blose as they approached the last table lOp jump, but carne up short by inches. Pryor took the win, Blose was second and Hayes third. MOIO two saw Pryor lead every lap, fi.nally stretching it out to 10 seconds over Hayes at the finish line. Kirk rounded out the tOP three. Pryor led both the 125 and 250cc classes in points. The large I25cc Beginner class saw Matt McCreery lead every lap on his Western Honda-sponsored CR. Darren Donaldson put the pressure on McCreery throughout the molO, but came up short at the finish line. Chris Hoffarth took a close third over John Miller. McCreery.didn'tgrid for the second
