Dan Chivington and Bill Rein were some 01 the award winners at the Sunset Ramblers M/C banquet. . 810se blasts CanyonMX By Michael Ross PHOENIX, AZ, MAR 15 Chappy Blose took the 125cc Expert class and Brian Pryor splashed his way to the 250cc Expert class victory during the rainsoaked sixth round of the Arizona State Motocross Championships at Canyon Raceway Sunday. Blose beat Pryor for the 125cc overall with a 2-1 tally with Pryor besting Blose in the 250cc class with his 1-2 finish. As the points race winds down with two rounds of racing to go, Pryor leads Blose in the 125cc class by II points and the 250cc class by 19 points over Eric Kirk. A cold and windy Winter storm blew into Arizona on Sunday momin~ and soaked the Canyon track pnor to the start of the 250cc Expert moto. Pryor took off with his usual good start, but Eric Kirk was fired up and ran a strong second over Blose at the finish. . Moto two saw Blose hoping for more raiJ;l. "I hope it rains hard and the track gets really muddy," said Blose. "Things could change quite a bit." When the starting gate dropped Kirk led the pack into the first turn with Joe Marziano and Johnnie Der~mo in tow. Pryor was next to last out of the gate. Blose took third from Deremo on lap two and second from Marziano on lap three. Up front Kirk was racing his best moto of the series, splashing through the 250cc Amateur d'ass back-markers. Pryor was making Rood time and took third on the f~urth lap of the ~e-lap moto. With Blose breathirIg down his neck, Kirk was desperate to keep his lead and marched through lapped traffic quickly. Kirk tangled with Kyle Killebrew and passed Mow Chapman so close his brake pedal was bent into a pretzel, making it useless. On lap six Kirk couldn't hold off Blose any longer and relinquished his lead. On lap seven Blose's prayers for rain were answered as the skies opened up with a driving rain and a little hail thrown in for good measure; conditions virtually unknown to Arizona MXers. Lap seven saw Pryor get by Kirk, but Blose was out of reach. The order at the finish was Blose, Pryor and Kirk. After the race, a heated debate over Kirk's riding tactics took place betweeJ) Kirk, track promoter Tom Timmons, and Kyle Killebrew's . father. Kirk explained saying, "I'm out here to win. I shouted for those guys to get out of the way. I'm really into this thing," (the series). Tim- . mons cautioned Kirk to use more discretion in the future. Deano Cowan took the 250cc Amateur class win with a 4-1 tally. Howard Dendy took the first moto win over Rick Nagle and Todd Cup with Cowan in fourth. Cup grabbed the lead at the start of moto two with Tim Faust in second and Cowan in third. Cowan passed Faust on lap two and led the race on lap three as he pulled away to a 10 second margin over Cup. Dendy, J.D. Crawford and Na~le battled right up to the finish Ime with Crawford squeaking past Dendy for third. Cowan leads the points chase over Chapman and Wiedman. . Cowan widened his lead in the 125cc Amateur class with a second place finish. Scott Connelly won the overall, but trails second place Wes Parker by 15 points. Parker made a token appearance after breaking his collarbone last week at Firebird to garner valuable series, points. The Junior Cycle class is being hotly contested by Jason Matthews and Jimmy Mokry. The two leaders are only three points apart with Matthews in the lead. Mokry took both motos Sundaf'over Matthews. He then presented the Runner-up Rider of the Year plaque to Bill Reiss of Springfield, Ohio. Reiss who rides a KTM, had six firsts. four seconds and two thirds for a total of 148 points. Chivington went on to introduce the Rider of the Year, Matt Kelley from Marion, who races both a 125cc Honda and a 250cc Yamaha. Kelley was presented a jacket and a plaque. Chivington told with a smile of several occasions while racing hare scrambles, of Kelley having fun roosting him with mud while both were trying to win their respective class. Kelley had II firsts, four seconds and one third place finishes for a total of 194 combined class points. Maeda CASTIAC, CA, MAR. 15 In a startling move designed to stimulate interest in the local observed trials scene, the Southern California Trials Association hosted the first cash payback trial in the second 1987 ATA points event - the Stone Trial.
