'Rob Pfetzing and Shawn Moran attack turn one at Costa Mesa; Pfetzing ended up tied for fifth with Brad Oxley in the final point standings. consequently the first two races saw red flags. Lance King was excluded for causing the red in event one, a race that was eventually won by Weslake-mounted Steve Lucero. Event two was red flaged when Brad Oxley and Dubb Ferrell both crashed, in separate incidepts, on lap one. Both were allowed to restart but Mike Faria won the rerun by a half straight over FerrelL Schwartz, who less than a week earlier had won the Lgng Beach event, served notice that he was the man to beat when he carne out for event three. Schwartz grabbed the lead at the start with john Cook in close pursuit Cook pulled a wheelie off tum two and that let Schwartz build up a' big lead that he carried . to the Jerry King checkered. Even though he had a bad case of the flu and was walking around the pits with a blanket draped over him, Shawn Moran held off the advances of "Showtime" Bobby Ott to close the first round. john Sandona, who had been having a tough series, got on the right track and won event five. Ott came off the pole and took event six .ahead of Lucero. Faria, off on gate four, finished dead last. Schwartz, getting his only pole of the meeting, beat the ailing Moran to the first turn in event seven. Oxley then relegated Moran to third on the first circuit. Oxley stayed in second until he came off turn four the final time when he crashed into the front chute wall. Moran got back by for second while Gary Hicks had to lay it down to avoid Oxley who ended up getting disqualified for causing the tangle. After King ended the third round with a· win, Schwartz and Faria met in event nine. Faria's bike wouldn't fire so he hopped on Lucero's back up Weslake. Faria came off the pole and got the gate but he wheelied out· of 'turn two and the ever alert Schwartz and Keith Larsen snuck by. Schwartz ran away while it took Faria until the end of the second revolution to get back by Larsen. Faria was having all kinds of trouble keeping the front tire down on the unfamiliar machine and he wheelied out of the final bend and just barely held off Larsen to take second. Moran, Lucero and Rob Pfetzing all made it 10 the first corner at the same time in event 10 but Moran got the best drive off turn two and he parlayed that into his second victory of the night. Ferrell and Sandona then collected the victor's spoils in the next two events after starting in the pole positions. . Like the previous Sunday at IMS, Rob Pfetzing was advancing his position one spot in every race and that meant he should win event 13 and he did just that over Oxley.. Ferrell took Schwartz wide in the first corner and offered him an elbow at the start of event 14. By the time the defending National Champion recovered he was mired in last spot and had little chance of catchIng up. Lucero bagged the win over Sandona and Ferrell while Schwartz drew the duck. Colorful john Cook won his only event in race number 15 while Faria, back on his jawa won event 16 over Moran and Shawn McConnell. Even though he won, Faria had a glum look on his face in the pits. "This one is done for the night. It got slower and slower every lap." He then instructed his pit man to go and check the tire pressure on Lucero's back-up machine. Ferrell got to the main by winning event 17 over Moran. Moran's second place finish garnered him one of the spots in the main as well. Lucero cruised to a win and a place in the main in event 18 while event 19 saw Faria's hopes come to a crashing end when he bit the' dust on Lucero's machine in tum two. Pfetzing took the win ahead of Sandona. The final qualifier had Schwartz stamped all over it and he won by a half straight over Tom Burba. Schwartz had. the overall championship in the bag so all that was left was for him to win the main. He took a big step in that direction by starting on the pole. Moran was out of two with Lucero in three and Ferrell out of four. Moran pushed hard on the tapes and that almost sucked Ferrell through but the wily veteran managed to hold his machine back before they snapped. Schwartz got the gate with a wild scramble taking place behind him in the first bend. When they got sorted out going down the back chute Lucen'o had advanced to second with Ferrell taking advantage of a Moran bobble to move into third. Schwartz never looked back. Moran continued to have problems and he dropped way off the pace while Lucero and Ferrell maintained their positions in second and third. At the end it was Schwartz by close to a half straight oV.er Lucero and Ferrell. The regular season at Costa Mesa will get underway on Friday evening, • April 3. Results MAIN: 1.
