Coar cranks at OcalaMX By Gwen Millan OCALA, FL, FEB 28 Chip Coar, riding the only Kawasaki in a field of Hondas, ran away with wins in both Open Novice motos at Round 7 of the FMC Winter Cup Series, held at Ocala. Steve Petty fimshed the day in second overall with a 2-2 score, and Gary Briles was just as consistent, rounding out the top three with a !l-!l showing. Coar, who hails from Waycross, Georgia, grabbed the holeshot in molO one ahead of Jacksonville rider Briles. Petty, presently running second in the series point standings, five 'points ahead of Coar, was off the line in third, while series point leader Mark Bazinet was running fourth and Mitchell Holstein was in close contention in fifth. By the third lap, Coar held a gOod lead over a tight, four-way battle for second. Peuy moved into a lonely second Ib~ by the fifth lap, while Briles, .net and Holstein argued over third. Coar led Petty across the line for the win, and a final charge at the flag saw Briles best Bazinet for third. A tiring Holstein finished fifth. _ In the second moto, Coar grabbed ..the holeshot again while Petty held the edge over Briles for second. Jacksonville's Mike Smith, who pIaced sixth in the first moto, came out of the gate in fourth and Holstein was running fifth. Coar had run away from everyone by the third lap, leading a hot battle for second between Petty, Briles and Holstein. It wasn't long before Holstein grew tired again, leaving Petty and Briles to battle for second. Petty pulled away from Briles on the white flag lap, but he was too far back to put pressure on Coar. Briles and Holstem rounded out the top four, with Bazinet closing up the top five. . In Expert. Mini action, Yamahamounted Bnan Harper took the win over Jeff Curry (Yamaha) and Chris Umstead (Yamaha). Series point leader in the Mini Expert class, Ernie Millan, riding with a broken wrist, was forced to circulate in last place. Trying to salvage as many points as possible, Millan coasted around the track, trying to stay out of the way until he could complete half his laps and wait for the checkered flag. Results .... w.: 1.
