Pfetzing and Ferreell. Even though Pfetzing finished second it still gave him enough points to qualify for the main. Schwartz then closed the qualifiers when he won event 20 over McConnell and Bast Since he was the top point scorer Faria (ShoeilGeorge Wenn/Cody Racing/Oakley/)) had his choice of starting spots in the main and he took the pole. Pfetzing asked for rwo with Schwartz taking three and Ott oUlof four. Faria and Schwartz sandwiched Pfetzing in turn one sending Pfetzing to the dirt. Ott gOt a poor start and when he saw Pfetzing down he laid his machine down in a non academy award performance and out carne the red. Luckily, for Ott, the referee didn't toss him out (or his less than academy award performance. P(etzing had reinjured an ankle in the spill but he joined the other riders for the restart. This time Pfetzing got the gate but Faria shot inside him for the lead as they carne off turn two. Schwartz then moved alongside Pfetzing as they came off turn four the first time and he took second away in turn one on lap t"Vo. Pfetzing pulled off on the third revolution and at the same time Schwartz was charging Faria. The "Boogaloo Kid" was on Faria's rear tire and they both wheelied off turn two on the last lap. That gave Faria a little advantage and he won by one length ahead of Schwartz with Ott third. Faria explained tire turn one crash that sent Pfetzing down. "It is called first cornet bunching. Everybody going for the same' place at one time. They could all gate pretty hard. The gates were goin~ slower (tapes going up) on the outside. I took the inside because the trap was breaking faster."
