the last lap when his bike's transmission locked over a jump, causing a spectacular crash. Rice was unhurt while Brown rode on to claim his second perfect score of the day. Series champ Trey Phillips earned second via his 4-2 tally. The first moto of 125cc C action saw series winner Eddie Addair open up a quick lead over Eric Powell. By the end of the second lap, Powell had crashed back to fifth position and Shane Templeton had recovered from his slow start to nail down second spot. At the eight-minute mark in the IS-minute molO, Addair began lapping riders and found fellow Virginian Templeton breathing down his neck. Addair quickened his pace and beat Templeton to the checkered. Addair holeshot the second moto but took a wrong turn in the start section, giving the lead to Billy Reel Addair reentered !.he race at the back of the pack and stormed back to finish third, good enough to win overall ahead of Larry Whitt's 5-2. Reel won the moto but DNF the first. Worth Honda's Templeton was in third with two laps to go but a pair of spills held him to a sixth place finish and fourth overall. Said Templeton, "I had high hopes for the second molO but I got tired and started falling. This was my first race since I got hurt last November." Results Aaron Bollinger leads overall 125cc A c18.. winner Gerald Wood in the first moto at Sandhills MX in South Carolina. track specialist, turned in another fine performance to win from behind over Gary Hicks and McConnell in event six. Moran rocketed off the line in event seven while King gOt a poor gate. By lhe end of lap one Moran had built up a sizeable lead while King had powered his way to second, but his bad start cost him any chance of catching the former World Long Track Champion. Schwartz made it two-for-two in event eight while Hicks defeated Ron Pfetzing in event nine. Event nine also saw the end of Sandona who blew up his GM motor. Anyone who thought that Oxley was having a fluke performance only had to watch event 10 as he took his Pratt tuned Weslake to an impressive win over Schwartz, King, Ott and Lucero. Miller again gated the pack in event 11 and then !}ad to fight off the persistent Faria for his third ttiumph of the evening. Moran won event 12 but then was beaten by a stubborn Lucero in event 13. Moran tried everything he knew, but Lucero was equal to all of his challenges and scored a well deserved win. Pfetzing cooled off Oxley by taking event 14 by five bike lengths. Schwartz got back on the winning ledger in event 15 while Miller looked the rider to beat as he won event 16 after another great gate. King opened .the final round with a win that gave him the points lO move into the main evenL Brown, who was competing at Long Beach for the very first time, had the crowd roaring at the finish as he came from the back to finish second including a last lap outside pass of McConnell. Schwartz gated Miller in event 18 but Miller fought his way into the lead in. tum two. Schwartz then climbed all over Miller using both the inside and the outside but Miller hung tough and kept his perfect score going. Moran and Hick closed out the qualifiers with wins in event 19 and 20. The main event was comprised of the top five point scorers. Moran drew the pole with King out of two, Oxley out of three, Schwartz in four and MiJler on the outside. Moran grabbed the edge over Schwartz and Miller. Miller, who had to take the wide line through the first bend, was about one foot off the fence when he did a wild wheelstand as he came off turn two. It looked like the blonde competilOr was going down but he made a miraculous recovery and amazingly never lost a position. Schwartz (Silkolene/C.T.I. Brace/ Oakley/CireLio/Bell Wesl:J.ke) got a good drive and raced around Moran on the back straight on the first circuit for the lead. Moran, riding a lower line than Schwartz, stayed close and tried to ride underneath the National Champion as they came off tum two on the third revolution. That was his last real challenge and Schwanz, who won the 1984 American Final on the same track, took the checkered by nearly a quarter of a straightaway. Moran held on for second with Miller, who bobbled in the final corner third. King and Oxley were way off the pace and they took fourth and fifth. Schwartz was rather subdued after the win and stated, ''I'm just happy to start the season off with a win and now I have to get ready for lOmorrow afternoon (round two at IMS)." Results MAIN: 1.
