At the end of Lap four he led second pl·ace rider Scott Mapes by 1:29 and that was as close as anyone got after that. Mapes held second place until lap six when he dropped out, moving Morales up to the runner-up sLot, a distant three minutes behind Griewe. Griewe made his one and only pit stop at the end of lap seven, but held enough of a cushion on Morales to gas up and return to the race with a comfortable lead. Myerscough was able to blaze back into the top five on lap se.ven but had to pit for gas again at the end of the lap. Kevin Montgomery was the first 250tc class rider at this point, holding down fourth place. Griewe continued to lead, but Myerscough was flying, and on lap eight, the Honda rider· managed to get past Morales and was up to second, cutting down Griewe's margin by one minute per lap. At the checkered flag Griewe crossed the line just over three minutes ahead of Myerscough, when at one time, Griewe led by over five minutes. Morales wrapped up the top three finishing six minutes behind Griewe. Chuck Miller and Montgomery rounded out the top five and were the first 250cc class riders. In Saturday's racing, 125cc deSert ace Eric Hallgath had the initial lead in the 125cc Expert class but dropped out on lap two. With Hallgath out, the door was opened for Keith Senn 10 assume the lead with John Braasch and Gene Etzenbereger rounding out the top three spots at the end of lap three. Senn continued to hold a safe mar- gin into lap four with Braasch, Andy Segal and Larry Thompson fairly close for second, third and fourth positions. Lap six saw the first pit stops for the leaders as both Senn and Braasch stopped for gas. Senn was able to hang on to a three minute lead and Braasch was a comfortable second at the end of the next Lap. . When the white flag came out on Lap nine Senn had a 4:30 second lead on Segal. Over the Hill Gang rider Kinney Jones had worked his way by a tiring Braasch for third. Senn safely crossed the line at the end of lap nine for the overall win and was first I25cc bike, but Segal, after .possibly running out of gas, had to push his bike down the scoring lane and was just nipped atthe flag by Jones for second overall. Braasch was fourth and Senior Expert Terry Davis took fifth overall. Saturday afternoon's race featured the Open Sportsman clas~, with som~ of the top Experts riding 10 get a look at the track for the next day's race. Ogilvie snatched the early lead in the race with Morales in hot pursuit. Ashcraft was riding hard and forced his way into the lead on lap two, dropping Ogilvie and Morales 10 second and third, respectively. By the end of lap two the Honda XR600mounted trio had pulled away to a substantial lead on fourth place rider Randy Blevins. Ashcraft stretched out a small margin of about one minute on Ogilvie, who was only about 30 seconds ahead of Morales. When Ashcraft pitted at the end of lap four, Ogilvie and Morales kept going and assumed the top two spots. Ashcraft got the lead back quickly, though, and was leading again by·lap five with Ogilvie and Morales in tow. Darkness was rapidly closing in on the track by this time and many of the Team,Suzuki ATV mechanic and Baja 1000 co-winner Chuck Miller posted a third place overall and was the first 250cc bike to finish. bik~s that had headlights had themr turned on for the Last two laps. The white flag came out at the end of lap six and it was Ashcraft easily holding the lead. Morales had moved around Ogilvie for second and the first 250cc bike was Craig Adams in fourth.
