Paul Vlach charges to the front of the pack early in the 125cc Interrnediat.e race. He went 2-1 to capture the class win and series championship. Matthew Bates (228) and James Dobb (64J) duel in the 125cc class. Dobb won the first moto but wound up finishing second overall. Sloan Cooper (414) heads Jon James (477) during the 250cc Jr. bout. Cooper used a consistent 3-3 tally to claim the.overall. Clle/Dodge Truck Golden State National Amateur IIX: Final round Vlach edges victory at Spinners By Troy Scott PORTERVILLE, CA, FEB. 28 Honda-mounted Paul Vlach survived a series long duel with Cagiva rider James Dobb and wound up clinching the 125cc Intermediate class Championship for his effort Saturday at Spinners Race~ay. With the class title up for grabs, the 125cc Intermediate class packed its way through the first turn at tbe start of the first moto with Dobb grabbing the holeshot. But bot on his tracks was Vlach, who searched and searched for a hot line around the ~giva rider but never found an 0Penmg. Dobb went on to wm the molO just ahead of Vlach. . Vlach shot out of the gate brea. thing fire at the start of the second molO and never looked back. Dobb couldn't quite match Vlach's pace and settled for second in the molO, a second in the results and second in the series. Final points had Vlach picking up 360 points to Dobb's 329, The 500cc Intermediate class pro- duced some fine racing. In the first molO, Darin Hoeft powered his Honda CR into the early lead followed by Mike Hooker, Kevin Barda and Mike McLain. During the second lap, Barda crashed and dropped 10 sixth but quickly began making up for lost positions. Soon after, McLain battled back up 10 the leaders who were banging handlebars lap after lap. After taking control of third, McLain was followed by Davis and Jon Miller. While the top three riders dueled, McLain saw his chance and stuffed his way around Hooker for second place. Once into second, McLain set after the leader Hoeft. McLain made many attempts 10 sneak by Hoeft, but the leader kept slamming the door shut and holding on 10 his lead. . By the time the checkered flag came out, Hoeft managed to hold on to his' slim lead over McLain, while Davis found his way into third. In the second molO, Davis stole the holeshot but was quickly passed by McLain. Shortly thereafter, Hooker slipped by Davis for second, while Hoeft and David Bagwell rounded out the top five. . By the second lap, NttLain~had ex tended his lead to a six second margin, while Davis found a way around Hooker. A few feet later, Hoeft also dropped Hooker another position. During the fourth lap, Hoeft began to pressure Davis and' eventually made a move. Hoeft dove to the inside of Davis and the two dragged side by side down the straight with neither rider backing off the gas, which resulted in the tworiders colliding into each other and crashing. Davis remounted first, while Hoeft lost a few more position. A lap later, the molO ended with McLain ,takin~ tbe moLO win and overall, finishmg ahead of Hooker and Bagwell. The first 250cc Intermediate moLO saw a'restart after three laps of racing due to a faulty starting gate. The second start had Honda rider Tony Graves jump into the lead followed by Davis, Tallon Vohland, Tim McClintock and Hooker. After the end of the first lap, Vohland and bis Kawasaki were on the warpath and had taken over the number two position. Once into second, Vohland set his sights on the leader, Graves. Vobland pursued . Graves for a few turns and saw his chance down a long, rough'straightaway. Vohland pulled alongside Graves and nudged his way into the number one position. Out in front, Volland had clear sailing all the way as he extended his lead, while Paul Malin moved into fifth. At the finish, it was Vohland capturing the viclOry ahead of Graves, Davis, McClintock and Malin. Vohland blasted into the lead at the .start of molO two but crashed shortly thereafter, dropping to sixth. This gave the lead 10 Vlach who led Guy Deckert, Davis, McLain and McClintock.
