ToM-Free Reservation.: 1-800-HILTONS • Neuwell nabs Sandy Oaks HS By Merle Acord KEITHBURG, IL, FEB. 22 "I keep everything in gear, crack the throllle, give it one hard kick and dump the clutch; that's the only chance of gelling the holeshot in a dead-engine start," said Dan Neuwell, overa]) winner of Burlington Valley Dusters M.C. Sandy Oaks Hare Scramble, annual hare scramble season kick-o£(. Neuwell coupled his starting technique with two hours of out-from riding and was never' headed in his charge through 18 two-and-c)ne half mile loops. The course was laid out at the Sandy Oaks Motorcycle Park, adjoining the Big River Forest Preserve and it consisted of handlebar;' width scrub oak and deep, sandy soil, that rapidly deepened to arm-shoulder wrenching whoops. "My arms pumped up and I couldn't hold on," said second place AA class Kawasaki rider Steve Sulzberger. "I cut back and tried to get loose and nothing worked umil I stopped for gas. After that I got too loose and really did a number. It was one of those where I wem one way and the bike went another." Willis VanZee, riding a Hickman Racing-prepped 250 KTM, won the AA class and finished second overall. When asked about his fourth place overa]) SIOl after the first hour VanZee said, "I wasn't too worried. I had them in sight and I knew it would just be a mauer of time. When I pulled up to Smith he had had it. He didn't even give me a fight when I passed." "I wasn't too bad," said 250ccclass winner Kawasaki rider Dale Smith. "I got tired, but my biggest problems were on the last lap. I wem down three times trying to pass guys." Jeff Huddleston, who rode his 500cc Husky through the scoring barrels 17 times for the Open class trophy said, "I was doing preuy good umil the last half hour and then I got tired. Smith passed me and I got tangled up with a couple of slower guys and I must have lost 10 minutes. It was probably less than that, but it seems forever when you're trying to get bikes apan." Harvey Whipple and Gary Williams had a dice for top honors in the 200cc class with Whipple taking the first place trophy, but it was the scorers that impressed Williams. "I couldn't believe it," said Williams, "when I was still 20 yards away the scorers were waving me on. I'm telling you riders were going through the barrels in third gear. One of the fastest places on the course was through the barrel ." "The Burlington Valley Dusters M.C.-sponsored their first hare setamble in 1963," said club official Dennis Schenck. "They weren't hare scrambles like they are today, they were more like flat tracks in an open field with a couple of jumps. The spring hare scramble is a tradition with us and we hope to have at least 24 more." Results AA: 1. Willis VonZee (Kn....); 2. Steve Sulzberger (Kow); 3, Morlt Menin (Hon•. SR: 1.
