Wood was struggling to get the
new bike out of his Newport Beach,
California, shop as Cycle Week
rapidly approached, but the fourvalve, single was air-freighted to
Florida on Saturday. February 28.
I
Wood .is planning to sell ~e road
racers m 5l!O, 600 and ~ displ~cements dunng the uptOnung raClng
season.
When Cycle News visited Wood's
facility on February 27, the racer was
ready except for seat and tank paint.
"This has been quite an undertaking," Wood, wl)o's mainstay has
been in the din track racing arena,
said. He had just completed work on
the fairing which is based on that
of a Honda RS250.
The frame holding the Austrian
motor is made of chrome-moly steel
tubing with the back two tubes
actually holdin~ engine oil as pan
01 the lubricauon system. Rubber
hoses carry oil to the engine oil
pump. Wheelbase on the bike is
adjustable from 53.5 to 55.9 inches
on the bike Carr will race at Daytona.
. The front forks are Yamaha TZ250
units and the rear shocks are Works
Performance. Both wheels are also
off a Yamaha TZ250.
It is unknown how competitive the
500 will be against the smaller
Honda RS250 and Yamaha TZ250
twin-cylinder two-strokes that have
been dominating the class, but Wood
was hapPY with late February Willow Spnngs test sessions that saw
Doug Toland at the controls.
"Doug was very helpful," Wood
said. "He's helped us set the bike up
for Daytona."
