J , , '~Jt;J ~I ., '.J"'''''~' ~-,. Endurothon racing inside and around the Santa Clara County fairgrounds - famed San Jose Mile. Carr and his KDX200 Kawasaki lapped the entire 250cc field for the overall homos, while Tavis was likewise in a very heavily emered Open clasS riding a YZ490 Yamaha. Carr patrolled the perimeter of the track speculating on how to ride his tiddler but absoluLely banzaied Lhe troops with a P'emendous effon, SLOpping only once for fuel. He lapped the field in a tremendous display Lhat could only be expecLed from an upand-coming champ, such as this 19year-old. The third ra e of the day, Lurned ugly when 80 riders lined up for Lhe go signal, bUL a good start ensued and iLwas Jim Owens in the lead ahead of all the open class riders. Shawn Cady and Tony Alves were running second, in from of John Tavis and SCOLL Nail. It was La be a thriller on the less-LhanLwo-mile track. Owens held off Tavis for three more laps~ bUL the pro motocrosser could not fend off the scrambler, so Tavis and his Louis AruLa-built YZ490 would lead until Lhecheckers at lap 6 I. Both rode iL iron man style and were stopped only by crashes and gas, and LhaL might have been the undoing of Owens who found himself dicing with former Grand National Champion Steve Eklund, who ran solo and stopped once for a drink and a sandwich. When he returned, he was down LwO laps bUL in the position of challenging Owens for a spot. Owens kept up a brisk challenge and crashed, losing just enough time to not be a challenge in the final moments. VeL Expert motocrosser Duane Hughes hung in for Lhird on his CR500 Honda stating that he was just getting ready for the upcoming CMC Golden StaLe National Series, while former pro Tim Alarcon was almost recovered from the Magooville crash and took fourth over Gan Rabe and Eklund. The Spencer Bros., Brad and Rod, rode brother Gearld's YZ490 for seventh Expen in from of Alves/Cady with Jerry Kennedy taking ninth on his ATK, having some help from Wes Morrell and winning the Junior portion.
