The crash-plagued 100 miler, originally scheduled for Decem ber 6, was run in two heats with motocross scoring. Gunn handily won the first heat and held of[ the determined second heat charge of Deiter Lane. Heat one saw Gunn, Kelly Byrd and Lane battling for the top spots. Terrence O'Brien, Dale Kieffer and Rick Williams rounded out the top six. Tom Dahl was running up front until a seized cylinder on his Yamaha TZ-250 knocked him out of contention. Mike Ross crashed on lap five while running in seventh place. Brian Joder was also running up front until his throttle stuck wide open in turn three. Joder's Suzuki was completely destroyed and he suffered a broken collarbone. Williams and Kieffer battled back and forth until late in the first heat when Williams' Kawasaki 600 Ninja coasted to a stop out of gas. Byrd ran well until the closing laps when a back marker tagged him and sent Byrd to the-pits. Gunn finished the heat in first ahead of Lane, O'Brien and Kieffer. Gunn and Lane continued to battle throughout heat two. Gunn's big Suzuki pulled out an eight-second advantage, but Lane low-sided in turn 10 and DNF. Byrd was back up front on Lance Baker's Honda VFR750, but was knocked off for a second time injuring the toes on his right foot. Tim Bergstrom tried a daring pass on Williams in turn three that almost worked. Both riders went down at a high speed. Bergstrom managed to restart but Williams' beautiful Kawasaki was on the trailer for good. Gunn collected the second heat win, the overall win and the prize money. The Superstreet B win went to O'Brien. Kieffer took Superstreet C honors with his Yamaha FJ-600. Superstreet D went to Steve Barnard. PRRO president Les Johnson had his hands full at day's end with protests, yellow £lag violations, and scoring inaccuracies. Johnson and his crew worked late Saturday night to sort things out, but several class po~i tions were still unresolved at press time. Results SUPERBIKE A: 1. Kye Gunn (Suz); 2. I New Year's Day 1987 dawned with 400 riders ready for Tom Anderson'sannual ewYear's Day Hangover Marathon at Sand Hill Ranch. The races began at 8 a.m. with 22 mini riders competing for 45 minute. Danny Nelson got the holeshot from a dead engine start. Ten laps later, Nelson crossed the finish line with an uncontested first place. Matt Furman finished second_ The second race of the day began at 9; 15 with the 125 and 250ccs riding the same track for 90 minutes. There was some confusion at the first checkpoint, as each division had separate chutes for scoring. Rod Habaig led the I25cc class for six laps, but had to pull out with a £lat tire. Dale Razor took over the lead and went on to a first place finish. Stan Finney came from behind to place second out of 45 riders. The 250cc division had 83 riders dicing it out and the win went to Kelly Andris over Jon King in second. The first division of 500cc bikes began with teammates Rodney Smith and Danny Paladino taking the lead. Smith and Paladino both DNF and the win went to Shawn Reed with Gary Fargo taking second. The second division of 500cc bikes was won by Kipp Classen followed by Jeff Irwin in second. The Vet-Old Timer class ended the day with vets Jim Ashley taking first and Ron Knarr second. Old Timer winner Richard Christian beat Leon Price to the checkered flag to end the day on a winning note. PRROnames class champions By Michael Ross PHOENIX, AZ, JAN. 3 Racers filled the Pizza Inn at Metro Center Saturday night to honor the Phoenix Road Racing Organization's 1986 Class Champions. Norm Benedum took the coveted number one plate with a string of first place finishes in Stock D. The PRRO veteran scored a perfect 160 point. The number two plate went to PRRO president Le Johnson. John on scored 144 point and the Vintage 2 class championship. Next in line was Tim Berg trom. Bergstrom garnered th'e Formula Three championship and collected 128 point. Michael Ross took the number four plate with 124 points and the Stock C championship. Team Razor celebrated Craig Martin's number five plate and his Superbike B class title. Martin narrowly beat Richard Kohn for the fifth spot. Both riders scored 120 poims, but Martin had two more first places. Kohn raced his Kawasaki 900 Ninja to the Superbike A title and the number six spot. Kevin Elliot finished seventh this year on his Yamaha RD350 while Yamaha RZ350 mounted Rick Williams took the number eight position. Vintage I class champ Steve Bernard will wear the number nine plate with Kelly Byrd, the Formula One champ, rounding out the top 10. •
