Cycle Gear-sponsored Bertram and his 430cc Automatic Husky lost 8.93 points for second overall, while Husky rider Rick Daniel (9.79), KTM- mounted Bill Berroth (9.120) and Chip Howell (10.92) rounded out Lhe top five. Almost 400 rider igned up to do ballie and wben it was allover, it was Postel taking the narrow win, bot early in tbe event, it didn't look as Lhough it would be his day. The very first check in the loop one, Postel arrived too early and burned Lhe check, dropping a quick two points. "I came up to the check Lhat was on LOp of this hi]], and as I came around the turn at the top of the hi]], I put my foot down before I even saw Lhe check," said Postel. "Then when I did see the check I realized) was a few seconds too early, so) balanced until a couple of seconds into my minute, but tbey had already marked my minute when) put my foot down. I protested but it didn't do any good." But that turned out to be Postel's only mistake of the day for he finished off the first loop wiLh a zero. "After burning the first ched," said Postel, "it really fired me up for Lhe rest of the event. ) Lhougbt I threw it all away, but I regained my compo· sure, because ya never know what' going to happen later on." The first loop lasted for approximately 40 miles through mostly canyon-rype terrain which didn't give the A and B riders too muchltrouble, although the speed averages were fairly high and challenging. Daniel, however, did burn a check that most riders had a relatively hard time arriving on schedule. He felt the check was off and protested, but like Postel, Daniel lost Lhe argument. Loop two was slightly longer in length and aimed the riders high up into the mountains. The trails were much tighter than Lhe first loop, but Lhe main obstacle Lhroughout Lhe loop was rocks, and there were lots of Lhem. ") like riding in Lhe rocks," said Postel, "and) guess Lhat comes from my desert racing experience." Postel _
