- ---- ~ ~ (,Q 00 O"l ,.....; ~ 0 ,.....; l-< Cl,) ..0 8 Cl,) u Q Cl,) B-to-V winner Cliff Thomas searches for the fastest line through the rugged Mojave Desert terrain. Team Husqvarna's Dan Smith, winner of last year's B-to-V desert competition, finished fifth overall, second Open Expert. 8 20 miles of the race on a rear flat tire to take sixth overall in his first B-to-Y attempt. "My main problem was at the start," said the open expert from Phoenix, Arizona. "I got my usual bad start, one of those two kick things, and then I didn't know anything about the bomb because I got here late and didn't get a chance to practice on it. After a start like that it's catch-up-in-the-dust all the way." Seventh overall went to Answer/ Silkolene-sponsored Don Griewe on a four-stroke Husky, with Smith Goggles/Husqvarna/Acerbis/Autolite/Bel Ray/Hi Point/After Hours Designs-backed Scot Harden taking eighth overall (first in the Yet class). "This is my firstride since the Baja 500 back in June, so I got tired really quick," said Harden. "Other than that I had fun. "This is my last ride on a Husky too," he said. "I resigned two weeks ago, so that's it for me after being with Husky for 12 years. I'm going to keep active in racing through and hopefully race some Yet stuff next year. " Ninth overall went to Paul Krause, who told Cycle News his Honda 500 still has not learned how to behave on the starting line. "What do you mean, 'did it start?' Of course it didn't," said Krause. "As per usual, I kicked and kicked and ended up last off the line. I was playingcatch up the whole race. !thought that I rode real well, but everything that was out here to get me, got me." Krause, who thanked Craig Adams of Escondido Honda for lending him the extra rear wheel that got him to the finish after an early flat, grabbed ninth from Eddie Ogden, Jr. just before the finish, relegating the. Yamaha 250 pilot to 10th overall. Grant Palenske (250 Honda) finished II th overall, followed by Mike McDonald (500 Kawasaki) and Charlie Morris, Jr., who was almost unable to walk after ramming a rock with his foot just after gas three. Team Husky's Larry Roeseler, who finished 14th overall on a 1987 430 Cross Countr·y, was unhappy with his finish. "This race is jinxed for me," he said. ''I've won every off-road race in the world but I can't win this one. It was lots of little things this time - I got a flat tire and I did the wildest crash of my career, just after the bomb. I don't know what happened but I ended up flying backwards on the bike in a wheelie position. "The bike ran great and the suspension was great," he said. "It was the first time we've raced one of these in the country." John Braasch, who rode a 125 Yamaha from Granada Yamaha, fin~ ished 16th overall to take second in the C class Expert division, finishing just ahead of 125 Cagiva-mounted Bryan Folks of Las Yegas, who finished 18th overall. . First in the Senior class went to Richard Jackson in 29th overall. His closest rival in the Over 40 divisiOn,' Dick Myer, finished 55th overall. The Super Senior class was won by Curt Horst in 76th overall, with Jim Main taking second in 117th overall. The first woman rider to cross the finish line (l40th overall) was Dana Bell on a Yamaha IT2oo. Bell also took overall honors in the Women's class at last year's B-to-Y. "II was just flat and fast, and there weren't enough rocks," Bell said. ''I'm an enduro rider so I'm used to technical stuff. I prefer riding enduros but this race is important because it represenls our righl to ride in the' desert. It's so prestigious just 10 ride B-to-Y, and to finish it is great. There's only one B-lo-Y." The first novice rider to tak-e the checkered flag was SoCaI M.C.'s Ken Rieger, who brought his Honda 500 home in 109th overall; it was his first B-to-Y race. '·It was easy compared to' the regular hare and hounds we have in D-37, but I wish they'd put the last section first," said Rieger. "I was sore by then and it was so rough I had a hard time hanging on. "[ got a three-kick start but I was still first one to the bomb. I couldn't figure out why everyone was going so slow," said Reiger, who expects to be bumped up to lhe Amateur ranks any day. . "[ hope they bump me up," he said. "I want to start with Smith and them. [ finished l09th overall today so I must've passed about 700 guys. I'd like to see what I can do starting on the front row." In the Beginnerclass, the win went to motocross rider Darren Davenport who was riding a 490 Yama'ha in his first-ever desert race. "I had a great time and I'd like to be back again next year," said the rookie desert racer. "But I'll set my bike up a' bit better next time." The second rider to cross the beginner finish line at Stateline was Yamaha-mounted Doug Huston. • Results OVERALL: 1. Cliff Thomas (Vam); 2. Mike Baker :Yam); 3. Dan Ashcraft (Hus); 4.
