At the end of the first lap, Moen held a three-minute lead over Barnhill who was followed closely by the first 250cc rider, Todd Kennedy. Fourth and filth overall belonged to Rob Nolin and Bruce Taylor, both on 125s. Moen continued his pace, building up a lead of over five minutes at the finish. Barnhill went uncontested for second overall. "This was my best race yet, I got a second kick start and passed a lot of people down the sandwash," said Barnhill at the finish. Charlie Walker rounded out the top three in the Open class and took the Amateur win at sixth overall. In the 250cc class, Kennedy maintained his third overall most of the raceexceptfor the second lap. "Taylor came by me wide open in the dust with my feet off the pegs. I followed him into the pits, then passed him down the sandwash and took off," Kennedy said. From there on, he was all by himself taking the class win and third overall. Second in the 250cc class went to points leader Rheynard Morgan at eighth overall. "I didn't get a good start and spent the whole race trying to catch up, the course was so fasttbat it was hard, said a frustrated Morgan. Richard Domeno got an excellen t start and hung on to take the 250cc Amateur win at 10th overall. Bruce Taylor's only chance to catch Bob Bell in the 125ccclass points is to win all the remaining races. His riding reflected this fact as he followed early leader Nolin on the first lap then blitzed by into the lead. Taylor was on the ragged edge as he inched into third overall for a shon time before settling into fourth overall and running away with the class win. Nolin, who never saw Taylor pass, rode a conservative second lap assuming he had the lead. Once he was alerted of the situation it was too late and he had to settle for second, one minute behind Taylor. Wes Enz rode a smooth consistent race, holding off a late charge by Bell for third in class, first amateur. Results 30 Moen OVERAll: 1. Tom (KTM~ 2. Todd Barnhill (Han); 3. Todd Kennedy (Yom); 4. Gravitt grabs Gobbler Getter Enduro By Phyllis Apone MAPLESVILLE, AL, NOV. 2 Allen Gravitt riding a new 1987 KTM 250 MX masterfully overaIled round eight of the SETRA Enduro Series. Today's race was also co-sanctioned witb SERA and AMA. The first baH of the enduro with its wide open trails seemed too easy and many riders and pit crews thought that this would be a very close and competitive run. Can-Am'sJohn Fero took the early lead dropping zero points, followed by Allen Gravitt and Mitch McRee who only dropped one point each followed by many expert riders all dropping two points into checkpoint three. The gas stop, at32 actual miles was held back at the starting area with SERA and SETRA members each having their own areas for pit stop. It was from this point that the trails started to get tight with many pits to fall into and rugged uphills and steep downhills. The spectator point within these treacherous trails, just before the sixth checkpoint made the riders maneuv'er through the fire fields, where there were many downed trees, logs and roolS to grab bike within their cl utches. This area is where Fero became a victim of the many potholes and lost his lead to Gravitt, who managed to drop only seven points through the sLxth checkpoint. George Waller Jr. and Bryan Adam each dropped eight points with CanAm's Joey Hopkins and KTM's Bob Shillinger close behind them, only nine points down. Tired and thirsty and needing gas, many riders found help at this reset where Vickie Roberts was awaiting with water and gas to help out. The top three finishers in the AA class were all SERA riders whereas SETRA members trophied in most of all the other classes and took the overall. In the Open A class George Waller Jr. just beat out Hopkins for first place and second overall. Hopkins trophied second place in this class and Terry Mealor on his Husky was third. In the 250cc A class the war continues between Bryan Adams, Bob Shillinger and Greg Roberts on a Suzuki, which is also how these three contenders placed today. Shillinger is currently in the lead for his class' SETRA pQims, but Adams and Roberts are close enough behind to steal that lead at any time. The prized overall B trophy went to Husky rider Darrell Cox again, keeping his lead over fellow Husky rider Dale Stegall who took first place in the Open B class. In the Senior A class Barry Higgins aboard his 1987 KTM kept his lead over Honda mounted Jim Ford. This is Higgins' sixth win in his class. Results OVERAll: Allen Grovin (KTM). AA: 1.
