Menser mean at
PaducahST
By Karen Lewis
PADUCAH, KY, OCT. 19
The WKCRA ended its racing
season with short track racing
in Paducah. The season finale
drew 135 riders.
The Open class final got underway
with DenDe Williams leading the
pack once they sorted things out
through turns one and two. But then
Scott Rothschild cooked into turn
three a lillie hot and went down, taking four riders with him.
Everyone made the restart with the
exception of Rothchild, and David
Menser made the most of the restart
and nailed down the lead with a tremendous holeshot. Menser then used
the cushion while everyone else stuck
on the groove and he cruised in for
the win over Williams, Tommy Register, Dallas Mayer and John
Faulkner.
Bart Schmulba h and Scott Lamb
led the 125cc class final with Joel
Barrow right behiDd them waiting
for a mistake. That mistake almo t
came on the last lap as the two front
runners ran together on the back
traight. Neither rider went down
and Schmulback held on for a close
win over Lamb. Barrow finished third
with Mike Mayer fourth and Robbie
Grief fifth.
Gary Wielt aD.d WiIl.iams .hooked
up in the ~ fmal WI~ Wlelt taking the WID over Williams. John
King, Kevin Woodruf~and Brell Gale
rounded out the top five.
Wielt came back to lead the 250cc
final but he couldn't hold off Lamb.
Lamb found a line past Wielt at the
halfway point and then built up a
comfortable lead en route to the WIn.
Wielt was second and Schmulbach
took third with Chris Allen and Eric
Estep finishing fourth and fifth,
respectively.

the overall win and the series point
standings lead in the third round of
the SE&TRA Hare Scrambles Series,
the Foothills Hare Scrambles. The
win was Higgins' second straight in
series competition.
Approximately 85 riders competed
on the very technical course laid out
by Six Days competitor Randy Hawkins near Table Rock State Park.
There had been four previous events
here and each was plagued by rain, as
was this one.
The start came too soon for several
riders as they missed the start. SeDior
class competitor Jim Ford was one of
that group. He missed his wave's
start by a minute and a haH.
Honda-mounted Burne Hamrick
was first into the woods, followed
closely by KTM rider Mitch McRee.
By the time the first wave came
around to the MX track portion of
the course, it was ageless Higgins in
the lead, followed by Husqvarnamounted Brett Tankersley. Several
top contenders dropped out early in
the race. Joey Hopkins got crossed up
in the woods and hit two trees, and
Darryl Kuenzer 'and Steve McSwain
were eliminated when they suffered
mecllanical problems and a fiat tire,
respectively.
KTM's Allen Gravitt played catch
up all day after his '87 250 failed to
start when he wanted it LO. Fifty-five
seconds after his class left the start
line the KTM fired up. Gravitt admitted 'he had suffered brain fade and
had failed to warm up the bike.
Higgins held off Tankersley for
seven taps and then had to hold off
Gravitt. Spectators started cheermg
Higgins on because they wa!'lted to
see him beal the "boys" agam. Approximately three miles from the
end, Higgins thoughtfully allowed
Gravitt to pass and Gravitt waved to
thank him. That was a mistake for
Gravitt immediately had a close encounter of the hurLin' kind as he
kissed a tree - with his face. Gravitt
quickly regained hi composure a~d
rode on with a black eye, busted hp,
and lacerations on the right side of
his face. He mana~ed to fi~ish second
overall behind wmner Hlggms and
first in the AA class. Yep, he ordered a
full face helmet the next day.
Freewheeling Honda's Ford, who
as mentioned started late, was the
only rider not to be lapped by Higgins and Gravitt and he took third
overall aDd first in the Senior class.
