Frida, 10-7 Jim Jepsen (788) and Peter Wensloff (~29) battled to a on~-two finish respectively in the 600t;:c Stock Production class at Sears Pomt. What made it especially impressive was that all the Intermediates ran together, and he beat all the 250 and 500cc bikes in both motos as well. Scott Murphy took second in both motos. The I25cc Pros had an interesting sibling rivalry for their main event. Lance and Brand Johnson, bOlh riding- for Din Bi·kt' magGlzin(', split the motos with Lance taking the second moto and, the overall 125cc Pro money. Lance and Brand are the sons of Doc Johnson, the MX Doc of Indian Dunes and other tracks. Michael Hillion showed his heels to the rest of the 250cc Beginners with wire-to-wire wins in both motos. Red Skaggs made his way up from bad tarts in both motos to take second overall in that class. Mitch Brewer made a spectacular comeback fr0':ll a serious injury la t year. In hls first race in a year, Brewer dominated the 250cc Novice race, passmg at wl1l to win both motos and the overall. Jim Telford took two holeshots in the 250cc Intermediate motos and led every lap for the overall win. Robbie Brand and Gregg Blechman diced over the econd spot, splilling the moto . Brand stayed well ahead of Blechman in moto two, for second in that race and second overall 250cc Intermediate. Mike Kiedrowski (Team Green, Answer, PJ I) had no problems winning both motos of the 250cc Pro race for fir t money. Clay Smith parlayed a first and a second into first overall in the 500cc Beginner race. Mike Sullivan ha~ a pair of firsts in the 500cc Novlce motos, but he had to fight his way past Dan Peterson III moto one to Will that one. Sullivan took the holeshot in moto two and went all the way for the win. Jon Miller also had two firsts in the 500cc Intermedlate race, to take home that class' honors. Results . PEE WEE B: ,. Jepsen takes AFM title at Sears RR By Roger Smith SONOMA, CA, OCT. 26 The battle for the AFM North overall club championship came down to the final race today at Sears Point International Raceway, but the two riders fighting for the title didn't ~eet on the track. The battle for POllltS was between Tom Aquino and Jim Jepsen, but when the day ended it was Jepsen who was crowned. Going imo the last evelll of the year, the last one that counted towards tilt' chall1[>lollsluJ-l. Aqull10 was the odd '-on favorite. LaSl year he cornered the number six plate, and this year he had been a consistelll winner all season, dominating the 600cc Super creet class. He had 12 g~:)Od finishe under his belt and was Just out 10 guarantee a margin of victory. The 600cc Superstreet class was early in the afternoon and Aquino got away from the line quickly, but Dale Rivers' Yamaha was just a tad faster in to the first corner. When the bikes appeared on the other side of the hill they came into view in pairs with Aquino and Glen Shopher and then Peter Smi~h and Mike Johnson. Rivers followed. It appeared that everyone ~as out for one last win of the season with tight racing going on all over the track. Johnson got past Smith in t~rn nine, a high-speed sweeper~ b!Jt S~lth reclaimed third at the fImsh lme. Shopher, meanwhile, had latched tightly onto Aquino's rear wheel and they came out of the carousel side-byside and tried to enter turn seven, a tight hairpin, the same way. Half a lap later Aquino had squeezed out a couple of bike lengths, but Johnson had passed Smith again and was closing fast on the leaders. On the next lap johnson proved his Yamaha had a Ii ttle more top end than Shopher's Kawasaki as he edged his way into second plac~. Shopher, however, had a bit more coming off the corners and he used it to slingshot himself back into second coming out ofthecarousel. He held'off johnson's artack for the next lap, even at the blistering I :53 pace t.\qui~o ~as setting. Shopher then set hiS slghts a notch higher as he held off on the brakes goin.g into· the slippery turD seven hairpin and set himself up for a pass of Aquino in the esses that fol· lowed. Johnson pulled up to Aquino's rear wheel and the battle continued. As they took the white £lag Aquino went for broke and shot past Shopher on the steep hill between turns one and two:Smith, who had been hovering just behind the leaders the whole time, copied the maneuver and grabbed second. Both managed to hold off any challenges in the final lap and the order at the finish was Aquino, Smith, Shopher and Johnson followed by Rivers. j~psen had raced the 600cc M~di lied Production and Stock Production classes all season. Stock classes don't contribute points to the champion-. ship but Modified Production is a pop~Iar class. He was behin~ Aquino in points going into· the fmal race, but due to the short season for AFM North caused by insurance problems, Jepsen had only 1I finishes (or points. Jepsen got the holeshot on his Ji Dl & jim's Yamaha, but Peter Wensloff was close behind. jepsen had cruised home seconds ahead of the field early in th~ season, but the competition had been steadily improving, especially Wensloff. And this was his last shot at Jepsen this year. After a lap Wensloff was s~ill at Jepsen's rear wheel and wa~ crymgro ease past him in the hlgh-spe~d sweepers leading into the turn II haI~ pin. They were followed by Ene Kondo and Kevin Crowther, who were having their o~n duel. Jepsen held off Wensloff, but Crowther won a braking duel with Kondo in turn 11 to move into third place. Wensloff kept up the pre sure on Jep en; looking for some way past him or for Jepsen to make a mistake. The next lap he tried motoring past Jepsen on a high, fast line as they came out of the carousel, but failed. Crowther and Kondo closed a bit, but when Wenslo(( tried again duriog the drag race between turn II a.nd the finish line, Jepsen trled to pick up the pace. Crowther and Kondo were left behind, but not Wen 10ff. Half a lap later he was still at Jepsen's rear wheel. He tried another move in turn seven, but got sideways on the exit and dropped back a few .leng~hs. Once the leaders started movmg through the back-markers, they sped away from Crowther and Kondo. At the finish it was jepsen by a length, Wensloff, Crowther and Kondo. The unofficial tally later at the track showed Jepsen now securely in possession of the number one plate. Results OPEN GP: 1.
